35-year-old Jenna was convinced her severe lower back pain would be with her for life.
As a young mother, she believed giving birth was responsible for her excruciating pain. Simply bending over and putting on her socks left Jenna in agony, a cause for concern at her age.
She had previously been diagnosed with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) – a very severe form of premenstrual syndrome.
After months of emotional highs and lows, her husband saw how much she was struggling.
No osteopath could rectify her back pains, so she was advised by her husband to start a personal training program with fitness industry leaders Ultimate Performance.
Thanks to a transformative personal training program, Jenna’s life now looks a lot different. Her pain is now under control and her severe mood swings are a thing of the past.
She is now mobile enough to play with her kids and even believes her marriage is stronger than ever as a result of her radically improved body confidence.
“On my ‘pain scale’ – I’d say I was probably nine out of 10. Now, it’s a one or two. It’s been a fantastic transformation.
“Working with my trainer and being able to speak to her about everything has been so helpful. She’s very understanding, very supportive and not judgemental about anything.
“I’ve got so much more energy and I can play with my children, nieces and nephews which I absolutely love.”
Here, Jenna speaks about how her trainer tailored a plan to work around her illness, how she feels energised in the mornings, and why training has made her feel like a better mother.
What motivated you to start training with U.P.?
My motivation was to get physically and mentally stronger. I wanted help fixing the back pain that I’d been experiencing for probably a couple of years now. I’ve had quite a lot of lower back pain, I think mainly from pregnancy which I’ve ignored for a while. I went to an osteopath which helped a little bit. But my husband could see I was in quite a lot of pain almost every day.
I would struggle getting dressed and putting on my socks in the morning, which sounds silly. I also found it difficult to pick my nephew up, who’s only two years old. I’m pretty young myself at 35 and I didn’t want to be in this much pain. So being able to pick up my children and have fun with them was a big motivation for me.
Did you feel you needed to make a change in your life?
I felt it was necessary to begin training with U.P. mainly to help with my physical health, given the back pain I’d been experiencing. I’d also previously been diagnosed with PMDD, a more serious form of PMS in women. I would have some quite low months that were up and down emotionally and there were a lot of tears.
My husband could see how much I was struggling each month, but I didn’t notice it as much. He encouraged me to come along to U.P. and have some sessions to see if my back pain could be fixed. My trainer has really helped me with the pain, which I never thought would go away. I feel a lot better inside as well.
How do you feel about yourself now after working with your U.P. personal trainer?
The biggest change I’ve noticed so far is I am not tired in the morning anymore when I wake up. I come down for my breakfast and I feel full of energy, whereas previously I would feel sluggish for a couple of hours. I also feel a lot better after I’ve eaten because I’m making much better food choices. I’m a lot more mobile now – I can lean over without being in any pain. I think on my ‘pain scale’ – I’d say I was probably nine out of 10. Now, it’s a one or two. It’s been a fantastic transformation.
How has your training improved your PMDD symptoms?
My husband saw that I was suffering each month, but I didn’t realise it. Working with my trainer and being able to speak to her about everything has been so helpful. She’s very understanding, very supportive and not judgemental about anything. So being able to work with a trainer like that has helped massively. I don’t feel like I have quite such severe mood swings now. So, I think the diet, the training and the supplements have had a massive impact.
How would you compare yourself from day one of your transformation to now?
If I were to compare myself from day one to now, I would say I am completely different. I feel happier at home and I’m more confident around my husband. We’ve been married for quite a long time now and we’re getting on so much better. I’ve got so much more energy and can play with my children, nieces and nephews which I absolutely love.
What would you say to those considering starting their own transformation at U.P.?
I would honestly say if anybody wants to feel better about themselves mentally and physically, come to U.P. Whether it’s diet, strength or losing weight, they can help. All the trainers really enjoy what they do and are extremely good at what they do. I am thankful to my trainer and the team because they’ve completely changed me. I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to train here.
