Los Angeles ranks as the most active city in the United States based on the number of citizens exercising at least once a week, according to MINDBODY’s 2020 Wellness Index.
87% of residents in Los Angeles stay active at least once a week, closely followed by San Francisco (83%) and San Diego (82%).
However, health and wellbeing metrics rank very differently across Los Angeles between wealthy neighbourhoods, including Santa Monica, Brentwood, Beverly Hills, Bel Air, and Pacific Palisades, and less affluent areas, such as Compton and Hawthorne.
Brentwood, home to our original U.S. Ultimate Performance gym, fares well with fewer than 12% of children being obese and residents living to 84.7 years on average, according to a city report.
MINDBODY’s Wellness Index also shows Los Angeles is the fittest city in the country, with the highest percentage of residents meeting CDC guidelines for physical fitness. The guidelines advise adults should do at least 150 minutes to 300 minutes a week of moderate-intensity exercise, or 75 minutes to 150 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity.
This positive trend extends to the home of our West Hollywood gym, with analysis showing 48% of adults are meeting the recommended guidelines for physical activity in the area.
Statistics collected by a Highway to Health report show that if Los Angeles County were a country, it would today rank inside the top 25 in terms of longevity of life. The average life expectancy in Los Angeles is 82.3 years compared to the national figure of 79.1 years.
LA County’s Cities and Communities Health Report suggests a key factor affecting life expectancy is obesity rates. Obesity-related chronic illnesses continue to rank among the top 10 leading causes of premature death, including heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
Obesity rates vary across the region, as reflected below:
- 29% of children and 37% of adults in South Central Los Angeles are obese, which is significantly higher than the rest of Los Angeles.
- The adult obesity rate in Long Beach is 21.6%, which is 8.1% lower than the United States adult obesity rate of 29.7%, according to a 2021 Country Health Rankings & Roadmaps report.
- 22% of adults are obese in West Hollywood, according to a Los Angeles Department of Public Health report.
In terms of diabetes in Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County Health Survey an estimated 758,000 LA County adults (9.8%) have been diagnosed with the condition.
Among those with diabetes, an estimated 69,000 people (9%) have been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and 573,000 (76%) have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, a condition that causes the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood to become too high.
Given the well-documented link between obesity and ill-health, our proven methodologies at Ultimate Performance target effective weight loss and have helped over 20,000 clients in Los Angeles and across the globe transform their health.

Finding the right personal trainer in Los Angeles isn’t easy. There are no universal standards that mark out a good personal trainer from a bad one in the fitness industry, generally.
