Businessman Matty was in the busiest season of his life — selling multiple companies, travelling non-stop travel, and juggling the demands of hectic schedule.

All the while, 37-year-old Matty was trying to keep on top of his fitness. He’d train 7 days a week – Barry’s Equinox, and Soul Cycle – but he was getting nowhere.

The stress of his lifestyle caused him to gain weight. His diet was keto in name only – no carbs, but no limits either. Keto pizzas, keto Pop-Tarts, zero tracking. Despite the effort, he was gaining soft fat and losing control.

Then came Ultimate Performance and his life changed. With expert coaching, a structured plan and a team that genuinely cared, Matty finally had the same level of support for his body that he had in business – and the results were unstoppable.

Over 14 weeks, he has shredded fat, lost 6 inches off his hips, added 70 or 80lbs to his strength, and built the kind of physique that people can’t stop noticing.

Here, he shares the mindset shifts, habits and expert support that made it possible…

What were your expectations going into the program, and what were your motivations and goals?

I’ve been going through a really interesting season of life. I’ve been selling a couple of companies, and life got really hard. Last year, I got too skinny because of stress. Then I started stress eating. I told myself I was just bulking up, but then it got a little out of hand.

I would wake up every day and not feel great about how I looked and felt. I was doing all these remarkable things, but I didn’t feel good about who I was. I could keep going to Equinox multiple times a week. I could do the Barry’s and SoulCycle and Solidcore thing – or I could get some actual help.

I walked in the doors, didn’t know what to expect. Looked at the (results) wall and said, ‘well, if I’m going to do it, I want to be on the wall.’ I needed to regain the confidence and the joy in my life and how I felt in my own skin – and I did that.

How were you feeling mentally and physically before starting?

I still felt a sense of confidence and swagger, but it was misplaced. I was overcompensating. It wasn’t based on how I felt about me, or the work I was putting in.

Coming in here, I really wanted to regain a sense of self. I knew that if I followed the plan, took the steps, ate the meals and worked out the way you asked me to – we would get there. And we did.

What was your diet and lifestyle like before, and how did it change?

I was overtraining. I was working out seven days a week – four days with an Equinox trainer, Barry’s with friends, SoulCycle with friends, soccer with friends. But I was sedentary the rest of the day. I’d do one intense hour of training, then nothing.

My diet was keto, but nothing was tracked. I’d order Fresh Brothers keto pizza and eat the whole thing. I had keto pop-tarts. I thought carbs were the devil – no fruit, no bread, no rice, no potatoes. But I was still putting on soft fat from overconsumption.

I didn’t have any guidance or help. I was just figuring it out based on what I’d read online.

How did your strength change throughout the transformation?

If you had asked me before if I was strong, I would have said absolutely. But I came in here and we worked to failure every set. I saw gains of 60, 70, even 80 pounds on some machines in 12 weeks.

I now have a new sense of self-belief and strength I’ve never had. I’m stronger than ever and lighter than I’ve ever been. This place is life changing.

What parts of your life has this had the biggest impact on?

I’ve been in the most stressful season of my life. When I think about what U.P. and the team have meant to me – it’s this unwavering belief that I wasn’t going to fail.

No matter how hard work was, or how stressful family or life stuff got, I could come in here and put my body under a different kind of stress – and really go for it.

I looked forward to it. Even when I knew the pendulum was involved – I hated it, but I looked forward to it. This place has become a second home to me.

What were the biggest physical changes you noticed?

A better way to answer that question would be to ask what didn’t change.

I lost 5.5 inches from my waist, 6 inches from my hips. I put on size in my shoulders and chest. My abs are more defined. My legs feel great. Someone even said my ass looked fantastic in a pair of golf pants! Head to toe – everything changed.

What were the most important things you learned that helped you succeed?

The last 12 weeks taught me how to properly time nutrition and listen to my body. And it taught me to push – really push – even when I didn’t feel like it.

My coach and I came up with the idea of “do it anyway.” Don’t want to work out? Do it anyway. Don’t want to eat this? Do it anyway. Don’t want to hit your steps? Do it anyway.

We started with a goal of 10,000 steps. I said, ‘screw it – let’s do 20,000!’ And we did.

I also learned how powerful it is to ask for help. When I had a business dinner or work travel, I’d tell the (U.P.) team. They’d look up the menu, tell me exactly what to order, how much, and how to have it cooked.

Knowing you have a team that truly cares – that was the most helpful thing of all.

How has completing this transformation changed you and how will it benefit you going forward?

What does it feel like to complete the transformation? I’d argue we’re just getting started. This is phase zero – we start phase one on Monday!

I now have a system, a coach and a team that believes in me – and that I believe in.

In every other area of my life, I have coaches and teams of people who are smarter than me in their areas. Getting this team in place made me feel invincible in real life.

It’s made me better at absolutely everything.
