Thomas’s weight gain and niggling injuries meant he couldn’t even carry his four-year-old daughter to bed.

Even the simplest tasks became strenuous, as the 40-year-old reached his heaviest ever weight on the day of her fourth birthday party.

As she blew out the candles on her big day, Thomas couldn’t take his mind off the threat his elevated blood pressure and weight gain posed.

His intense new job with a tech start-up company left him more demotivated than ever to make a change. However, he soon realised he needed a lifeline to help him lose weight for the sake of his family.

 

His 12kg transformation under the guidance of Ultimate Performance has helped him rediscover what it feels like to feel fit, healthy and active.

Here, Thomas speaks about how his personalised plan taught him the principles of healthy eating, and how he developed a passion for fitness off the back of his U.P. experience.

 

 
 

What was your motivation to train with Ultimate Performance?

In the last few years, my fitness and health had slowly declined. I would often get pains in my neck and back. Physical activities were getting more and more exhausting, to the point where I just stopped and didn’t do any exercise at all. I have a young daughter and I couldn’t keep up with her anymore.

I used to like to carry her to bed, but I couldn’t do that without being in pain. I then took a new job in lockdown which meant intense work and long hours. I couldn’t go to the office or visit my clients, so in the end my lifestyle became very sedentary. I was having lots of coffee to stay alert and generally not making very good food choices at all. On my daughter’s fourth birthday, I hit 87kg which was my heaviest ever weight. At that point, I knew I needed to make a change.
 

 

What was it about U.P. that first impressed you?

My wife went to a trial consultation a few years back and was very impressed with what U.P. had to offer. She loved the testimonials of clients and the culture of excellence around the place. When I joined U.P., I saw the pictures of client results on the wall that she had told me about which really inspired me. I said to myself “I want that”. I wanted to be a ‘Client of the Month’ and be an inspiration to others as well.

 

 

How did you find your training plan while working with your trainer?

Initially, my workouts were killing me! I was leaving the gym completely exhausted each time. I didn’t even know I could work out that hard, but my trainer pushed me to get the very best results every session. I worked with my trainer to build a stronger core, to improve my overall mobility, strength and fitness. We changed the exercise selection up and worked on movements that I was able to do to develop my strength.

 

How important was your trainer in ensuring your nutrition remained healthy?

Before joining U.P., I wasn’t sure if I was going to have to plan meals by myself. I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to have family meals because my diet would be too specialised and restrictive. That wasn’t the case at all. We were still able to eat as a family and it encouraged us to make better food choices.

 

 

Following your transformation, what did your results do for you?

After just 16 weeks I have achieved some absolutely incredible results. My weight has gone down from 84kg to 72kg, so I have lost 12kg. My blood pressure always used to be elevated, now it is in the healthy range. Before my transformation, my blood pressure was 140/90 mmHg. It is now in the healthy range, sitting at 120/80 mmHg.

The most obvious part of my transformation is the physical change, I love the way I look and I’m confident in my body. I can honestly say I’m fitter than I ever have been in my life. However, I would probably say that is not the most important part. I now eat a lot cleaner and have learned to make smarter food choices which will stay with me forever.

I have also found a new hobby. I have become really interested in weightlifting, so I’m making a lot of choices to ensure I am the strongest and healthiest I can possibly be. My transformation has affected so many areas of my life. I sleep better, my focus has improved and I’m more productive at work.

I really hope that people around me benefit from that too. I really believe I am a better husband, father and colleague. I have put all this work in to build a great body which has given me a whole new level of energy.
