Thirty-two-year-old Chris, a busy design project manager, had been in a constant cycle of endless cardio with no results.
Years of doing CrossFit training were not showing him what he wanted to see in the mirror, causing his self-esteem to plummet and his confidence to drop.
After noticing what he called a ‘spare tyre’ around his middle, vegan Chris realised that something had to be done, and contacted Ultimate Performance for a transformation.

“My biggest takeaway about training as a vegan is that a body composition transformation is 100% possible. Not only that, but I think it’s even better.”
For years, Chris was convinced that cardio was the only way to stay in shape. CrossFit classes were not providing the results he craved, which was made worse by a clumsy diet.
Eating the same meals every day was taking its toll, racking up far more calories in his daily intake than Chris could have ever imagined. Convinced he was taking the healthy route, he was in fact starting to pile on the pounds.
“I’d have the same breakfast each day, which was quite high-calorie.
“I’ve been plant-based for almost 10 years, then I gave up alcohol. Despite this, I would make dishes that didn’t involve counting macros or calories.
“I really wanted to prove to myself that it was possible to get great results on a plant-based diet.”
Due to consuming far more than he realised every day, his weight began to creep up. Despite being ‘skinny fat’, Chris described not liking what he saw in the mirror.
Wanting to hide his body from his friends was beginning to take its toll on how he saw himself, which gave him the push to undergo his transformation.
“I wasn’t proud to take off my shirt at the beach – I’d always wish I had prepared better.
“I googled ‘skinny fat vegan’ and saw an article by U.P. – I knew this company would know something about getting results.
“I had this image in my mind and I wanted to see it in the mirror. What I saw was someone that was leaner and more muscular.”
Very quickly, Chris realised that strength training on a vegan diet was the way to achieve the body he wanted…and that it was more than possible.
With the right guidance, strength training program and nutrition plan, the weight began to melt away, revealing sculpted abs beneath.
Unlike when he was stuck in a vicious cycle of cardio and high-calorie foods, he finally began to see the results that he wanted.
“At the four-week mark, I saw my before and after, and I went home and stared at it for five minutes straight.
“Every four-week period, it was like, ‘Holy cr**! It’s working’.”
One of the biggest takeaways Chis has benefitted from is an improved understanding of nutrition.
Beforehand, reaching for sugary snacks was causing his waistline to expand and his self-image to dim.
With the help of his trainer and a tailored nutrition package, Chris has learned that he can prepare tasty, exciting foods, while still avoiding animal products and going over his daily calorie count.
“The most challenging part about my experience was getting accustomed to counting macros. At the beginning, I had no clue how to prepare balanced meals and I definitely needed a bit of hand holding.
“The first few weeks, I needed help when it came to recipes and nutritionally getting the right micronutrients and hitting my targets.”
Even Chris’ friends have noticed the difference in him, both as a person and how he looks on the outside.
Now, Chris is proud of what he sees in the mirror, putting his new physique down to commitment and a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.
His workouts have shown him what he is truly capable of, allowing him to enjoy the thrill of his trainer pushing him to his limits every time.
“I met a friend I hadn’t seen in nine months. I passed by a shop and wanted to get a sweatshirt, so I took off my jumper to try it on and my friend was like, ‘hang on a second! What has happened to you?!’ It was a nice feeling.”
During more intensive sessions, Chris highlighted understanding the point of being pushed to his limits by his trainer, in a safe and controlled manner.
“Every success story you see is literally the result of intentional failures – this helps me to understand tough workouts. I know it’s to exhaust my muscles and get to a point where I can’t keep going.”
Since completing his transformation, Chris has been a beacon of proof that incredible results can be achieved on a vegan diet, highlighting the expertise of his trainer and diet plan.
Chris now feels he is a different person, both in terms of looks and his soaring confidence.
“When I look at the before pictures, I don’t even recognise myself.
“What my trainer has done for me has given me the proof of concept and the blueprint for habit. That is invaluable.”
