I have stamina, I have consistency. I can breathe properly. I can run. I have all kinds of energy. And I’m happy to say that I can pick both my children up and they can’t keep up with me now.

A 20-year battle with a debilitating respiratory disease had always cast a cloud over Lalit’s life.

The 45-year-old’s condition, known as N-ERD, held him back in playful moments with his two children.

He couldn’t run, he couldn’t pick his kids up, and he’d almost accepted that he was beyond help.

That thought hit Lalit hard. He realised this precious time with his kids wasn’t going to last forever.

It was all the motivation he needed to get in the gym, but he knew he needed help to lose weight fast and keep him accountable.

As someone who had never trained for over 10 years, it was a learning experience from day one.

That meant mastering the split squat, learning to push his body to its limits, and understanding that carbohydrates weren’t always the enemy.

While Lalit is now as lean as he’s ever been and feels immense pride whenever he takes his shirt off, it’s the radical improvement to his health that means the most.

He’s able to manage his condition. He can breathe well again. He can run around the garden.

While Lalit’s six-pack will take some getting used to, the improved quality of life is something he cannot put a price on.

How he did it with the backing of an Ultimate Performance personal trainer, below…

 | Ultimate Performance

What led to the decision to put your health in the hands of Ultimate Performance?

My number one fitness goal was to get healthier.

I was out of shape and it hit me emotionally when I couldn’t keep up with my six-year-old daughter.

My youngest child was four, but I couldn’t run, I couldn’t play with them, I couldn’t lift them up. As a father, it bothered me.

My business partner had trained with Ultimate Performance and I’d seen what he’d achieved. I couldn’t believe it. If he could do it, then I could do it.

From a health perspective, I also have something called N-ERD, which is a respiratory disease.

I’ve had it for the best part of 15 or 20 years. No amount of medication could control it to the point where I could have a good workout or even be in the gym long enough for it to make sense.

How did your diet look before starting your transformative journey?

My diet was whatever I wanted it to be. It was a stress-related diet.

In retrospect, I didn’t know that, but I can see it now. I didn’t know what a carbohydrate was. I thought that not eating carbs meant avoiding pizzas and French fries.

I thought not eating those meant I was eating healthily, so I was pumping my system with things that were negatively affecting me.

U.P. taught me to be mindful of my nutrition. I never cared about my diet, but I’m learning that I need to be extremely aware of what I eat and it’s impact on my whole family.

We’re all healthier now, it’s amazing.

What were the biggest challenges you faced when first entering the gym?

I’ll never forget when my trainer first asked me to do a split squat. First of all, I didn’t know what it was.

Secondly, I couldn’t put my feet in the right position. And then when he gave me the weights, I was like, ‘you’ve got to be kidding me’.

Today I can do a lot more than I ever thought possible with multiple reps, 88lbs in my hands, and I can go 30 reps during my workout.

I couldn’t do a single chin up. And my trainer said, ‘don’t worry, we’ll get there’. I didn’t believe it.

Today he can strap weights on me, and I can do multiple reps. I’ve never been stronger in my life.

And the beautiful part is I’m confident that I’ve barely scratched the surface.

What effect has your experience with U.P. helped your overall health and wellbeing?

I didn’t believe that training hard, but in the right way with my trainer, could solve that. I was completely wrong.

I went in for a breathing test a couple of months ago and my doctor said, “you’ve never tested this high in your life.”

I thought it was my medication, but it was simply working with my trainer day in, day out. It’s how unhealthy I was underneath, how much inflammation I had, which is linked to my disease.

I felt exponentially better when the inflammation was taken away from me. I could breathe again, I could keep up with my workouts. I had stamina, I had consistency. I could walk, I could run. I had all kinds of energy. U.P. has changed the way I look and the way I feel about the way I look.

I’ve never been one to spend time in a gym and as a result of that I would never want to take off my shirt. Now I feel good about taking my shirt off and when I do people comment on the way I look, which feels great.

One of the most important things to me is the way I look. Who doesn’t want to look great.

Before U.P. I’d given up on that because it had been 20 years. U.P. has had a major effect, not just in terms of training and physical wellbeing, because it’s had an emotional impact.

How did your tailored training plan help you overcome obstacles such as injuries during the process?

I also had a lot of shoulder pain. When I started, I was very hesitant to lift weights because my left shoulder was out of commission.

I had physical therapy, I had acupuncture, I went to my doctor, but it had no benefit. I thought it was something I was going to have to learn to live with.

Within two weeks of U.P. the pain went away. I also injured myself badly on my neck and had two disc herniations, an impingement, and I couldn’t move for six weeks.

There was a nagging suspicion in my head that I had to get back in the gym to see my trainer.

Within two weeks the pain went away again. It’s amazing.

People think if you’ve got pain or an injury then it’s an end game. You just have to medicate it.

But you’ve got to build muscle around the area and strengthen it.

It’s magical. You’ve just got to trust the process and take on that ‘inch a day’ philosophy.

How would you describe your experience at U.P.?

The word I would use for this is ‘metamorphosis’. My daughter did a project where she brought a caterpillar home and watched it turn into a butterfly.

That was my journey. You can fly anywhere, you can do anything, you just need to unlock that confidence to be ready to change.

I’m happy to say that I can pick both my children up and they can’t keep up with me now. And it’s the greatest feeling in the world.

U.P. trainers are like therapists, they’re a doctor, they’re like Mr. Miyagi, they’re Yoda.

You’ve got something really, really special. You’ve changed more people’s lives than mine.

You changed my wife’s life. You changed my kids’ diet, you changed my parents’ walking habits.

You’ve changed people you haven’t even met. It’s contagious!
