Dentist Sonnie had fallen so far out of shape, just standing on the tube every morning was a challenge.
The 31-year-old’s poor physical condition meant he struggled to stay focused at work.
Sonnie had used two takeaway meals per day as fuel for the past 10 years, meaning none of his clothes fit him anymore. After taking a step back and looking at his physical state, he decided enough was enough.
Sonnie was looking for a personal training program with the same level of care and expertise he offered in his dental service – he found it at Ultimate Performance.

Sonnie simply turned up four times a week and followed his program, which helped him lose 14kg in just 20 weeks.
He is now brimming with confidence and feels more alert while working with his dental patients, making him the best version of himself at work.
“My work is very intense as a dentist, but it seems a lot less intense now. From a mental point of view, your mindset changes massively – you feel much more focused.
“I now have so much more energy and my fitness levels are much higher. I can do exercises effortlessly and I’ll happily take the stairs at tube stations.”
Here, Sonnie uncovers the training that helped him feel good in his clothes, how his eating has spearheaded his transformation, and how losing weight made him happier at work.
What did you enjoy most about your training plan?
What I enjoy most about training at U.P. is that firstly I had a schedule. I knew every Monday, Wednesday and Friday I was going to come in and work on exercises specific to my program.
I liked that I was coming in at 7am because it meant I was getting up in the morning and starting my day well. I also felt my program was tailored to my problems in terms of my fitness and what I wanted to achieve.
My trainer looked at how I was performing specific exercises and how I was doing my reps. He would regularly change things in relation to what was working for my body.
What was the atmosphere like in the U.P. gym?
The atmosphere at U.P. was terrific. One surprising thing to me is that other trainers know your name when you walk into the gym, which is quite strange.
Everyone is very positive and welcoming, which I think is important. Sometimes when you go to a personal training gym, or at least in my head, everyone is macho. I was the guy who’s just started, and I didn’t know what was going on.
That environment can feel very daunting as you begin to think “my body is nothing like yours; you’re going to judge me.” But it’s nothing like that, all the staff and clients are so welcoming.
How do you feel about yourself now after your transformation?
I now have so much more energy and my fitness levels are much higher. I can do exercises effortlessly and I’ll happily take the stairs at tube stations. I will happily walk somewhere if needed, and I can generally perform tasks much better.
I’m also far more educated about cooking now, I enjoy it and want to cook. I feel a lot more confident in my clothes and the way I look; the list goes on.
I thought that I was just going to the gym to lift some weights and feel a bit better, but it’s reflected in my lifestyle. My mindset has now permanently changed.
What sets U.P. apart from other personal trainers?
My trainer went above and beyond for me – there’s no comparison to other trainers at all. I have got friends who have been on other programs, and it has been nothing like this.
When I reflect on what I was like at the start of the program and look at my ‘after’ photos, I realised what I’ve achieved over the last four months.
The training is tiring and hard work, of course, but when you show someone who has no idea what you’ve been doing for the last four months and they see what you’ve achieved, it is incredible.
Have you noticed any improvements at work now you’re in shape and eating healthily?
I reached a point where work was becoming very tiring and slow. My work is very intense as a dentist, but it seems a lot less intense now. From a mental point of view, your mindset changes massively – you feel much more focused.
When you eat foods with high fat and high sugar, you feel very sluggish as the day goes on. You don’t feel good about yourself at all. Now I eat healthily, I feel much more alert and feel a lot better when I wake up.
