“I wanted to find a way to get out of the rut I was stuck in – my moods were suffering, and I was in a dark place. My body shape, mood and energy levels have now totally changed.”

A stressful change of job and early menopause symptoms couldn’t stop 39-year-old Samantha from losing 17kg.

She decided enough was enough after seeing herself in a bikini on holiday.

Her weight had spiralled out of her control, badly affecting her confidence and mood during the day.

Samantha found a plan at U.P. that helped her lose stubborn body fat and feel strong in herself before 40, to fight back against her early menopause struggles which “wiped her out”.

How did you feel about your figure before you came to U.P.?

I was quite ashamed of my body before I came to U.P. It was only when I went on holiday last year and saw myself in a bikini that I thought “this is not where I want to be”.

Because of the lockdowns in recent years, I don’t think I realised how much weight I’d put on. I was just sitting in my leggings or tracksuit bottoms.

But when I went on holiday, I was ashamed. I didn’t realise how bad my situation had become.

What did your lifestyle and diet look like before you started training?

I pretty much just ate and drank whatever I wanted. I didn’t know what I was eating.

It was just a case of if I was hungry, I would find something to eat. Or if someone wanted to go out, I would go and eat and drink whatever I wanted without thinking.

I had no plan at all.

What motivated you to start your own personal training plan with U.P.?

I knew my diet wasn’t good and I recognised I was stuck in a rut. Obviously, going on holiday and seeing my body was a huge motivation, but it was also the fact that I wasn’t moving around and I spent a lot of time sitting down.

I work from my laptop at home, so my steps were low, and I wasn’t doing much exercise.

I wanted to find a way to get out of the rut I was stuck in – my moods were suffering, and I was in a dark place.

I decided enough was enough.

How much did you enjoy your sessions?

I really enjoyed them, it felt like me and my trainer had a one-to-one connection. When I’m here it feels like it’s just us and she’s 100% focused on me.

The sessions really boosted my mood, even when I didn’t feel like working out that day.

Afterwards, I always felt so much better. My trainer also explained why we’re doing specific exercises, so I learned a lot about weight training.

Did you face any obstacles throughout your transformation?

I was going through early menopause, so my hormones were everywhere. I also suffer from bad periods which totally wipe me out.

I often felt tired and had no motivation at all, because it was quite painful.

With my trainer’s help, I’ve managed to come through it, as well as starting my new job at the same time.

It was quite a stressful time, but we managed to push through and I’ve seen incredible results.

Tell us about the changes you’ve made to your body.

I’ve changed my body shape, mood and energy levels totally.

Don’t get me wrong, there have been days where I didn’t want to train, but once I have it lifts me up. I started to notice a difference quite quickly because I sorted out my food – that left me feeling far more refreshed.

It’s difficult to explain, but my body felt cleaner, and I felt more energised throughout the day.

My weight then started to drop, and I gradually got happier with my appearance.

My husband and friends said my achievements are fantastic because I will be 40 next week. When you reach a certain age, you think you can’t achieve things because of the way your body is.

So, I’m thrilled with how far I’ve come and how my clothes fit too!

You’ve used other personal trainers in the past Samantha, but what makes U.P. different?

I think what makes U.P. different is the personal support and constant communication. I’ve trained with other trainers before, and that communication wasn’t there.

I just felt like one of many clients. I didn’t feel that at U.P. – it was more of a bond where you’re helping each other. I think that’s the main difference.

What would you say to other women anxious about starting a weight training plan?

I was probably one of them. I’d always tell myself that lifting weights wouldn’t really do anything and you’ve got to do cardio, cardio, cardio.

But I can honestly say weight training helps lift your mood and help you feel comfortable in your skin.

I would say jump in and do it, and you’ll be happy by the end!
