Every client at Ultimate Performance has a story. They all have a reason for contacting us, they all have a reason for wanting to embark on their very own transformation and it’s never just about the way they look. Mark contacted UP after his right upper arm was left paralysed and this triggered the start of a decline in his health, personal and work life. He knew something needed to change before it took over every aspect of his life.
Here about Mark’s story and how his transformation changed more than he could have ever imagined.
Sadly, earlier in my life I sustained a trauma resulting in the paralysis of my right upper arm. The main nerves carrying signals between the brain and a group of nerves in the upper right arm and shoulder area were damaged. This injury makes many standard upper body fitness exercises very challenging and any previous efforts to gain fitness in my adult life had ended in failure.
More recently, my shoulder joint has become arthritic – this means if I push any weight at all through the joint, it will only result in being further damaged and could have a huge impact in the use of my arm.
“Countless eminent physios had persuaded me that I would never be able to perform most exercises…I was never so determined to try and prove them all wrong.”
I knew very little about the fitness industry, very little about nutrition and physiology and time was running out. I was close to a relapse, I was close to giving up…potentially forever. I was losing energy and a threat to my career, purely through lack of vitality, was looming large. It was four and a half years ago, in my early 50s that I had an epiphany. I decided it was time to put every scrap of courage and time into one final push for fitness.
In early 2012, I was introduced to Ultimate Performance and I recognised immediately that their personal trainers had exactly the experience, skill-sets and ethics that I was going to need in my corner.
Firstly, my trainer Mark and I agreed and planned a programme that would allow me to achieve three simple, yet challenging goals; to be pain free, to be able to train without restrictions and to appear symmetrical in the shoulders.
All of those goals have been achieved.
I have learned about nutrition – the relationship between carbs, protein and fat and I now know the difference between good and bad fats. I have learned about the importance of hydration and getting the right food intake at different times of the day. I have learned about muscle groups, building fitness on the foundation of a strong core, and in more recent times, the importance of stretches.
“I am maintaining the same weight in stones and pounds as I was in pounds and ounces on the day I was born. Not many fit English, in their mid-fifties can say that.”
Ultimately though the weight loss, leading to sustained weight maintenance, supported by informed decisions about nutrition disciplined, regular fitness coaching, and in-between-training, and exercise, was not the big prize at all. The transformation turned out to be much bigger than that.
The big prize, which was totally unexpected, was just how positive a self-image I developed, and how much positive and controlled emotional energy my regime delivered.
“My relationship with my wife and family has improved.”
I’m calmer, I’m much more able to deal with the stresses of a busy working life and I’ve seen increased the responsibility in my career which is relatively late in my working years. I have learned to live with much higher levels of stress in my professional life and I am infinitely more inwardly confident.
It is madness but at age 54, I took up five-a-side football, playing every week with a group of colleagues, most of which are less than half my age. Progressively, from a very shaky start, I gained balance, pace, some skill, and eventually the strength, fitness and the bottle to run past opponents, and shoot at the goal. This was all something I never thought would happen at my age, a very unexpected pleasure.
I have my energy and stamina back, I look and feel normal.
“Four years ago, I weighed almost 21 stones. Today, I weigh 13st 7lbs.”
If you have a goal to be as fit as you need to be in your life, the UP trainers and gym are like no other.
Mark and his colleagues don’t do general transformations. They work intelligently and scientifically with you to figure out where you want to get to, using precision equipment to help you achieve your goal more efficiently and quicker than you could anywhere else.
If your gym club doesn’t have the specialist equipment, or the knowledge and experience in its personal trainers, it will take you longer to reach your goal; so long, that you will probably be so dispirited that you’ll stop trying and stop attending regularly. UP trainers would never let this happen.
