Management consultant Nick hit a real low following the worst 18 months of his life.

The 51-year-old was going through a divorce and lost his job, and was drinking more which took a toll on his health.

Nick was at his lowest point with his mental health and struggled to plan for a healthy future under his challenging circumstances.

Nick managed to secure himself a new job, after which his priority soon became becoming the best version of himself heading into his 50s. Unsure where to begin, it was Ultimate Performance who he called upon to deliver life-changing results.

After just 16 weeks, Nick now feels confident with the way he looks and has developed a far greater control of his coping mechanisms when tackling stress.

“I was at a point in my life where overall I just wasn’t going anywhere and wasn’t healthy, especially considering my age.

“My transformation has given me huge amounts of confidence. Just training with U.P. for 16 weeks has made me realise there’s more I could achieve.

“To lose over 12cm around my waist made a massive difference from a physique point of view and I feel great for it.”

Here, Nick speaks about how he lost almost 10kg in such a short space of time, and how his trainer was pivotal in showing him the importance of a routine both inside and outside the gym.

What was your motivation to initially start working with U.P.?

A number of things. Firstly, I was at a point in my life where overall I just wasn’t going anywhere and wasn’t healthy, especially considering my age. In the last 18 months I’ve had some of the biggest personal challenges in my life.

There was lockdown which was horrible for me, losing jobs, trying to find a new job and a divorce. I was at the edge of my mental stability. At one point I ended up on antidepressants. I relocated to London and started going to the gym, but I was making very little progress.

My girlfriend recommended U.P. from training here before and she told me this is the place that would make the difference, if you shared the same commitment. I think the thing that really swung it for me is, I was able to come in, meet the trainers and feel comfortable about it.

That was the motivation I needed, seeing a structure and realising I needed to do something with my life. I needed to have a commitment and a gym that was going to support that commitment.

How would you describe your lifestyle before U.P.?

Pre-COVID, I had various roles and jobs where I used to travel a lot. This meant travelling down to London because I didn’t live here at the time. That lifestyle was effectively burning the candle at both ends. I would do long hours at work, working from hotels and eating unhealthily.

It meant substantial amounts of alcohol in hotels drinking for free, even to the point of then go back to hotel bars at midnight and befriending the staff. That became a lifestyle. You could say I was a functioning alcoholic. It just wasn’t good for both my mental and physical health.

Now, the other aspect of that lifestyle was, I did cycle a lot. I did do some fitness, but effectively it was just minimising the damage I was doing to myself. Lifestyle post-COVID, so we had lockdown, I came down here with a new job. I hadn’t properly established a lifestyle, a rhythm. I was still drinking. I also didn’t have goals and targets around that anymore.

How has U.P. changed your lifestyle inside and outside the gym?

The diet and lifestyle has hugely affected my confidence and personality. I’m less edgy and better-tempered than I used to be before. I have to balance a number of things, and fitness has now a big part of my life, where it used to be just going out.

I’m also happy to have incorporated fitness into my life in such a way. Whether it’s with U.P. or just doing cardio. Fitness and exercise are now important priorities for me.

For anybody else who wants to join U.P., I did this when I had so many other balls up in the air in my personal life. I’m glad I trained at the same time as opposed to saying I’m going to wait until everything’s ‘right’ or easier for me.

How does your current physique compare to when you first walked through the doors at U.P.?

I mean, I could probably spend all day answering that question. I’ve lost a lot of weight and you can tell around my face, stomach and midriff. To lose over 12cm around my waist made a massive difference from a physique point of view and I feel great for it. It also feels great because I love clothes, I like spending money on clothes and going around shops.

It’s been great to see what I have achieved and to have the trust at the start of the program pay off. I walked into program thinking ‘would I really lose over 10kg and not end up really skinny?’ I didn’t want to just be skinny. My transformation has given me huge amounts of confidence. Just training with U.P. for 16 weeks has made me realise there’s more I could achieve.

How do you physically feel now, compared to when you started?

I now feel a lot less tired than I used to, and I’m definitely more powerful in the gym when lifting weights. I can tell there’s a huge difference in my performance even though I’ve lost body weight which is great. I also can tell I sleep much better than I ever have before.

I used to have bad sleep patterns down to my stress and alcohol, but I think having a training program has helped me sleep a lot better. That’s made a big physical difference to me from a health perspective.
