Parul’s weight had gotten completely out of control.
She was barely doing 100 steps a day and living off takeaway foods.
For her petite stature, the scales had tipped over 90kg which put her firmly in the danger zone for serious health problems.
With a family history of diabetes and the fear that all her vital health metrics were flashing red, she knew it was now or never to make a drastic change to her lifestyle.
Walking through the doors at Ultimate Performance Mayfair, Parul told the team ‘I just need help’ – and that’s exactly what she got.
Together with her trainer, 39-year-old Parul embarked upon an incredible transformation journey which has seen her lose 32kg and put her health firmly back in the green.
“I have lost 32kg. My body fat has gone from something which you could not even measure – probably close to 50% – to 15%.
“When I looked at the pictures for the first time, I realised that although getting healthy has always been my priority, I do like looking good.
“I don’t think I’ve ever looked that way. I have abs, which I’ve never had in my life. I am at a weight I probably haven’t been in 25 years.
“I feel younger and I feel more energetic. I have a new lease on life.”
Rewinding 12 months earlier, and Parul was in a bad place with her health.
“Before joining U.P., my weight was out of control. I was over 90kg which is more than double what someone my height should be.
“I felt lethargic, I felt my life was completely out of control and I didn’t know where to start and needed help.”
She was barely moving around during the workday, let alone exercising, and coupled with an unrestricted diet, her body and her health were paying the price.
“I did not cook; it was takeaways all the time. I work in an industry where client dinners and lunches are fairly common.
“I was working ridiculously long hours in a very stressful job, not sleeping very well, and from an exercise point of view, I realise there were days when I wasn’t even standing.
“I was probably doing 100 steps a day with cabs everywhere and I hadn’t been to a gym for years.
“There were black marks against every metric I could think of now from a lifestyle perspective.
“It’s no wonder I was piling on the weight.”
Parul knew she couldn’t keep going down this path.
Hearing about the success some of her colleagues had experienced at the nearby Ultimate Performance London City gym, encouraged her to seek help herself and come through the doors at Mayfair.
It felt like a big step, but she knew she needed to invest time and energy into improving her health and quality of life.
“Walking through the doors at U.P. was really a cry for help.
“I remember sitting in the chair and saying ‘I just need help. I know I’ll never have abs, but I want to be healthy’.
“That was my priority – really getting my health back and feeling my age and not somebody who is 80 years old.
“My thinking was I need to make my health a priority. I am very sure I was probably red-lining all the health metrics but I was too scared to get them checked.”
After years away from a gym, Parul felt like she had a mountain to climb to get to her goal.
But knowing that she had an expert trainer and mentor by her side every step of the way, who was totally invested in her success, helped give her the confidence to push on.
“It was a bit scary at first. I hadn’t seen the inside of a gym for 5 years. When you walk through the doors at U.P., you see some very fit people doing some very tough things and my starting point was pretty dismal.
“But I felt everyone was very encouraging and my trainer Rebecca was fantastic. There was no sense of being belittled at where I was starting off at.
“It was a very supportive structure and supportive environment. I saw results and got more comfortable over time.”
Since joining U.P., Parul’s lifestyle has changed beyond recognition.
She cooks for herself, she has mastered her diet and portion control, she is training regularly and her activity levels are through the roof.
“My lifestyle has changed drastically. I have learned how to feed myself and fend for myself.
“I have been training three times a week and I am also doing on average 20,000 steps a day which would have been unthinkable when I started.
“I bought an elliptical machine for home when it’s raining. All of this really helped get me through lockdown and maintain my results and even lose 10kg during the four months I was stuck at home.”
Building these healthy new habits into her lifestyle, losing weight and getting fit and strong has been a revelation for Parul.
She feels like a completely different person.
“I feel more energetic, feel more confident, I sleep better, all my friends say you’ve turned into this person we never knew you were.
“Previously I would blame my age or genetics. We have diabetes in the family – my grandparents have it so I will have it. It’s inevitable and there’s nothing I can do about it. That’s where I was at.
“My mindset has changed now. My health is a priority. If I work on 3-4 elements that are key, that doesn’t need to be me. I can make that change.
“The programme and what you are asked to do is not that difficult. It is pretty straightforward. If you follow it, you get there.”
Seeing the results of her hard work and dedication has been incredibly gratifying for Parul.
“To celebrate my transformation, I did a photoshoot. It didn’t hit home how drastic my transformation was until I saw the pictures. They were out of this world.
“It was one of the most amazing things I’ve done and those pictures are something I will cherish for the rest of my life.
“I didn’t tell my family I was doing it, and when I shared the photos my mum had tears in her eyes. She was so excited.
“I hadn’t seen them in a year the pictures tell a thousand words. It’s unbelievable – and thanks to my trainer and U.P. it is a reality.”
