From “Rock Bottom” to Feeling “Fabulous at 40” In Just 22 Weeks

Sarah was on the verge of turning 40 and says she was at rock bottom; overweight, tired and struggling with depression.

But the successful business analyst says she didn’t want to feel this way anymore so she decided to finally take action and change her situation by coming to Ultimate Performance.

Just 22 weeks later and mother-of-two Sarah is almost unrecognisable from her former self after losing 15kg and making a stunning transformation.

“This whole experience has completely changed my life.”

Happy, healthy, lean and motivated for even greater results, she said: “I feel 20 years younger. You can’t put a price on that.

“I feel like I felt 20 years ago, only with a lot more experience under my belt and a lot more wisdom than I had before and much more of an understanding of the things I need to do to keep myself healthy and feeling positive and energised.

The change in Sarah in such a short space of time is staggering. Physically and emotionally she was in a bad place when she came through the doors at Ultimate Performance.

“I knew that I was turning 40 this year. I knew I was fed up, overweight, stressed out, depressed, drinking too much; my daughter’s just about to go to uni this September and my son is only a year behind.

“I had just come out of an eight-year relationship as well.

“I thought ‘I’m going to be one of those long-been-miserable, fat 40-year-olds, crying into a bottle of wine every night watching TV.’ I just thought ‘I don’t want to be that person’.

“I don’t know who I am anymore; I don’t recognise myself; I look old, and I’ve lost my zest for life.”

 

Sarah says she felt the only things she had going for her were her children and her career, adding: “Even that was suffering because I’d lost all my confidence and my motivation.”

For years she had tried spinning and various other fitness classes, but nothing worked or lasted long enough to help her makes the changes she truly wanted.

Coming to UP was the change that she had been searching for all these years.

Having never really lifted weights and feeling like she was not cut out for fitness, she says it was tough even thinking about starting this life-changing transformation.

“I thought ‘just bite the bullet – it’s now or never for me’.”

Looking back on how far she has come, Sarah remembers how she felt on her first day at UP.

“The first session I came to, I cried all over my trainer Emily because she said ‘what do you want out of it’?

“She asked me some very direct questions, and I was brutally honest with her and I just fell apart. I just said ‘I’m at rock bottom and I don’t want to feel this way anymore.’ I get upset even now just saying it.

“I just didn’t want to feel this way anymore. She said ‘I promise you at the end of 12 weeks you will feel like a completely different person’.”

Sarah’s transformation journey was made even more challenging by problems in her life outside the gym which she said seemed to happen all at once.

“It’s almost as though from the minute I started my transformation everything went wrong on a personal level in my life. So many things went wrong. I ended up having to move house, I had financial problems, I was getting snowed under at work, my dad got diagnosed with Parkinson’s; so many things were going wrong and it all seemed to hit me at once.”

But it was the guidance and constant support of her trainer Emily that helped her stay on course to achieve her incredible results.

Sarah says without the steadfast dedication of her trainer she may never have made it this far.

“Emily was there for me all the way through it and she refused to let me give up on myself. I don’t think I would have got through it without her.

“..you know at the end you’re going to leave, walk outside, and you’re going to feel that little bit stronger again and more confident, and you’re going to have that little bit more belief in yourself because you’ve just smashed it for an hour.

“It’s like a drug. It’s that little kick or pick-me-up; pick yourself up and keep going, keep going, keep going.

“For me, it’s not just the body composition, the nutritional advice or the supplements I’ve been taking, it’s the belief that Emily has had in me from the beginning.”

Sarah says it was this accountability to someone else that helped her stay on track – but as soon as she started seeing the physical results, motivation kicked in and nothing was going to stop her achieving her goals.

“It happened so quickly. When you go from that to this in the space of a few months, it happens so fast you don’t even realise.

“The first time I noticed was three weeks in.  I got on the scales, and I couldn’t believe it – I’d lost 3 or 4lbs. I couldn’t believe it.”

“I got to 10-11 weeks in, and I stopped putting so much pressure on myself – it was no longer a 12-week transformation for me, it was a way of life. I went past the 12-week goal and I’d already seen so many dramatic results that, as far as I was concerned, this was something that I was just going to keep going with. I’ve kept going with it ever since.”

What Sarah has achieved in such a short space of time is phenomenal. The physical results speak for themselves; she has already lost 15kg, and she is leaner, stronger and fitter than ever before.

But for Sarah, it’s the impact on her health and her life outside the gym which is perhaps even more profound.

“My confidence levels have dramatically improved – confidence in myself,” she says. “I’m proud of what I’ve achieved and what I carry on achieving.

“Mentally, there’s been a massive difference. I was on anti-depressants for nine or 10 years.”

“Because of the exercise and the natural supplements Emily has got me on, because of the increase in my confidence and my anxiety levels, I’ve been able to bring myself off those.

“I did it myself. I’m over the moon about it. That was a massive achievement.”

Sarah says it has helped her as a parent – teaching her children about making better nutritional choices and even helped her son with his squat and pulldown technique at the gym.

But the true impact of her transformation didn’t truly hit home until her 40th birthday. It was a milestone birthday she was dreading before, but now she is in amazing shape and has rediscovered her zest for life.

“I sent my trainer a message on my birthday, and I got quite emotional because I remember I’d said to her ‘I don’t want to feel like this when I turn 40’, and I sent her a message saying ‘I feel fabulous at 40 and it’s all down to you’.

“It was a brilliant feeling because six months ago I was just miserable and heavy and tired and depressed. Now I feel like I’ve added another 20 years to my life. It’s an amazing feeling.

“Especially when you’ve come from that place where you’ve never really been active or physically fit. To have that complete turnaround that touches every aspect of your life is just a fantastic feeling and I love it. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
