When Kevin injured his Achilles’ tendon, it proved to be a wake-up call that he needed to get back in shape.

He wasn’t the same fit and strong man he was 10 years ago.

His weight had gone up, and his injury was stopping him from exercising properly – so he partnered with the experts at Ultimate Performance to change that.

What started as a program to build strength back up has turned into an all-encompassing life transformation that has got him lean, fit, strong and even back skiing injury-free.

Kevin had been trying to lose weight for a while with limited success.

He had tried CrossFit and different gyms, but without close guidance and a personalised plan, he only seemed to aggravate his injury.

His journey with U.P. started thanks to guidance from his physical therapist.

“I got connected with U.P. through my physical therapist, Carrie.  She connected me with the trainer here, and I was able to get hooked up.  

“My motivation was to recover from an Achilles injury that I had last January. I recognised that I was a little bit overweight and didn’t have the strength that I wanted to from where I was like 10 years ago.  

“The largest challenges were primarily recovering from the Achilles injury — I was always off balance and didn’t have any strength on my left side — and the second was just trying to maintain a low-calorie diet, it’s not one of my huge strengths, but I was able to able to do it.” 

When he started working with U.P., everything changed.

His trainer created a training program that would help him train safely and effectively while building his strength back after his injury.

“Coming to U.P., it really felt hands-on that I was getting the fine-tuned exercises. Everything was exacting of how I should be training versus when I was doing either CrossFit or going to the gym, normally you’re just kind of going through reps, and you’re not really fine-tuning your actual techniques.   

“Hopefully, I’m on my way to mastering many of the techniques and exercises these days.”  

Pairing this targeted training with a personalised diet plan helped reduce his weight too.

It also taught him the fundamental principles of managing his diet for life after U.P.

“I’ve learned a lot throughout the process, but primarily a good diet goes a long way.

“I never really realised how much junk I was putting into my body and just kind of the impacts of both how much energy I’d have throughout the day and how many excess calories I was putting in the body that I didn’t really need.”

Kevin’s results have been nothing less than exceptional.

He can feel the difference in every aspect of his life – and the changes he has made haven’t gone unnoticed by friends and family.

“Life outside the gym has been great. I’ve been able to go on multiple ski trips with no injuries and always recovering. I have also been able to hit a golf trip, but it’s a work-life balance between working out and having fun, and I’m able to do that much easier these days.  

“My transformation has been eye-opening too, especially my wife, she really recognises that my shoulders are now really rounded.   

“Everybody’s noticed that I’ve lost a lot of weight in my face primarily and giving me compliments that I’m looking great.”

“Comparing myself from day one to now, I started out with thinking of it as a strength program, and what I’ve realised is it’s more of an all-encompassing, whole-body experience.   

“My mind is much more engaged, I have a much better nutrition plan, and I have a good physique, so I’m really happy with where I am now versus day one.  

“The magic ingredient to success here for myself is just motivation. You got to be motivated to make the transformation. As long as you come in motivated and put in the time and eat properly, you’re going to make the transformation.”
