Andrew’s served in the army and was once an athlete, but he’s never had a physique this good at the age of 44.

Before coming to Ultimate Performance, he’d gotten to a place in life where his health was in the doldrums. Tired, overweight, and feeling ashamed of the way he looked.

The birth of his son sparked him into life to change this and get in shape…and with the help of U.P. he lost 21kg (47lbs) to bless himself with confidence that has genuinely changed his life.

He finally feels proud of his appearance and has noticed he has far more energy around his young son.

In this Q&A with his trainer, Andrew talks through his training plan and explains why no other program comes close to U.P. if you’re looking for results.

Andrew, can you tell us what motivated you to start personal training with Ultimate Performance?

I got to a place in my life where I was tired of not being proud of how I looked. I hate to sound narcissistic, but that was a big thing for me. Then with my son being born and my knees always being a problem, carrying that extra weight with my son being around made me realise enough was enough.

I was tired of not feeling good about myself and not liking my reflection in the mirror. I’m a former athlete and I used to be in the army, but I’ve never had a physique like this. I’ve been lean before, I’ve been able to run before, but I’ve never looked the way I do now. U.P. has exceeded my expectations.

 

Could you tell us what your diet and lifestyle looked like before you started working with your trainer?

Oh God. A lot of ice cream. I would pick my kids up from school and they would say, “Daddy, do you want to go get ice cream?” We would always go! I wasn’t conscious of what I was eating. I wasn’t tracking anything I ate, and I wasn’t very disciplined. I always thought I could out-train a bad diet, but I now realise that isn’t true. Working closely with my trainer has helped me understand what I need to eat to get results. It’s been a big mindset shift for me, and it’s definitely improved my relationship with food.

 

How much of an impact have these diet and lifestyle changes made on your life?

I don’t want to get emotional, but it’s been life-changing. Seriously, I look forward to coming to the gym. It’s the highlight of my day. It’s my place to come and do the thing that I love. Some people meditate to feel good. For me, my meditation is training. It’s my time to unwind and I thoroughly enjoy that. I’m just happier. This place allows me to step away from the stress and responsibilities I have. It allows me to reset myself. I love it.

 

How did you find the training in the gym? Was it what you expected?

It’s awesome. It’s the best I’ve ever experienced. I had a trainer before, but it was nothing like this. One of you’re the first questions I was asked before I started training was “How hard do you want to train?” I said 7/10. I explained that when I train at ‘10’ and give my full effort, I always hurt myself. But with my trainer at Ultimate Performance, it’s been different. I’ve trained hard but haven’t had one injury. He knew how to get the most out of me without risking any injuries. I trust him so much. If he said, “One more or two more”, I knew I could push myself. He ensured my form remained intact and didn’t allow me to cheat.

Okay Andrew, how would you describe your results with other trainers to your results with U.P.?

There’s zero comparison. I mean, the technology that you guys have and the way you tracked my progress was incredible. I loved being able to check in with my trainer. It felt like we were in this together. I never wanted to let him down because I knew how invested he was in my journey. He honestly wanted me to succeed and get the best results possible. So yeah, there is no comparison.

You guys are held to a high standard. It’s no joke what you’re doing here. I noticed that all the trainers look out for each other and work as hard as possible. What would you say were the most important lessons you’ve learned during your journey?

The most important lesson I learned? Definitely learning the correct form. The way my trainer explained how to lift weights and focused on the smallest details was incredible. I thought I was training right, but you guys helped me get the most out of every exercise. I now realise that I don’t need to load up as much weight as possible. It’s about good form and making sure every rep is controlled. I felt incredibly safe in the gym. I told you that I never felt strong as a kid. My dad was into bodybuilding, but I was never the confident type. That has changed now. And like my trainer always said, you’re not here to enter a strongman competition. You’re here to look good and feel even better, which I do!

 

So, how do you think your transformation will benefit you going forward?

This is a lifestyle now. I can never go back to the way I was. Never. It’s not something temporary. I was worried I might accomplish this and then let it slip, but you guys helped me see things differently. I’m proud of the work we’ve put in up to now and I know there’s still more to come. I don’t ever want to go back to how I was.

I feel proud and confident walking down the street. I feel good about myself. If you compare that to when I first walked through the doors, man, I was at one of the lowest points of my life. It’s funny because when I show people my side-by-side photos, they never realised how big I was. This transformation has given me pride that I never want to lose.

 

One final question for you. Would you recommend U.P. to anyone else who is serious about seeing results?

Hell yeah. Come on, man. I do it all the time already! I love this place. I love this gym. I love training with you. As I said, the training is second to none. I’ve never seen anything else like it. And I know you guys know what you’re doing, which makes a big difference because trust is everything, right? You can’t have a relationship without trust. I trust you and the process here.
