Turning 30 with his health in such poor shape was a wake-up call.
Hong Nan was desperate to turn things around, but didn’t know where to start. He lost 19kg with the help of Ultimate Performance and now feels in complete control of his health.
What motivated you to partner with U.P. and start your own training program?
The main reason I came to U.P. was because I was feeling tired most of the time. I felt my life was slowly spiralling out of control because of stress and work.
I had been sedentary for 12 years, was very overweight, and felt my health was really going downhill. I was piling on weight, and people had commented on my physique, which made me realise that I needed to do something about it.
My medical records also showed high blood pressure and cholesterol, and I was also struggling with a smoking addiction. I felt very much at a loss and found myself eating to cope with the stress.
Was your lifestyle affecting the way you were feeling?
I fell into a vicious cycle and decided that I needed to do something.
Most of my time was spent trying to sleep and recuperate from the lethargy I was feeling.
You could say I was desperate, to be honest. It was my 30th birthday this year, which I realised was an important milestone – so I wanted to make a change. But it was tough because I hadn’t exercised for years, so I didn’t know where to start.
How did you find your experience working with your U.P. personal trainer?
My trainer planned out everything I needed to eat and the training regime I should follow.
I had concerns at the beginning because of my poor self-confidence in the gym. I wasn’t sure what exercises I would be doing or whether or not I’d get injured.
I quickly realised that these weren’t things to worry about because of the guidance I was getting from my trainer and the resources that I had access to.
Since you started your training program, have you noticed any improvements to your health?
When I saw my weight drop, it motivated me and gave me the confidence that things were going in the right direction.
From that point, I could increase the reps and intensity of the exercises I was doing. I noticed my energy levels went up and felt I was in control of my health for the first time.
That was very important to me, because I wanted to push forward and tackle more challenges in my life. The experience made me realise that this was exactly what I needed to do. I should have done it earlier, but better late than never.
Do you think your training plan has improved your quality of life?
My quality of life outside of the gym has definitely improved.
My energy levels are up, and I’ve found that I can cope with different stressors at work a lot better.
I previously struggled, because I was feeling tired and unfocused. I found it difficult to cope with how I was feeling, basically. I now have much more control over my emotions, and everyone at home has noticed the changes I’ve made.
Would you recommend U.P. to people who are thinking about starting their own training plan?
As the saying goes, health is wealth. I realised at U.P. that health is the main attribute that will empower you to achieve whatever you want in your life.
If you look at it as an investment in yourself, there’s absolutely nothing to lose. I would 100% recommend U.P., it’s something that everybody should try and experience. It’s about giving yourself a chance of reaching your potential. Put your health first and make sure you’re the best, most confident version of yourself.
