No amount of running classes or HIIT routines were helping Erika lose weight.
She worked out six or even seven days a week, but couldn’t seem to shift fat from around her stomach.
With her 40th birthday on the horizon, Erika wanted a whole new approach to fitness. She loved training, but was too afraid to take a step into the unknown and begin lifting weights on her own.
It wasn’t until she started working with Ultimate Performance that she realised the value of weight training. She’s now sculpted her ideal figure and is the ‘happiest she’s ever been’.
Just three sessions a week have transformed Erika’s body. The process was simple – master the fundamentals of lifting weights, stay consistent and prioritise nutritious foods.
She is no longer anxious about showing off her midriff in the gym and feels much more confident whenever she leaves the house.
“My entire body shape has changed, and my clothes fit me so much more comfortably.
“I feel much more confident in myself now, especially lifting weights. My sleep has improved, and I feel as if my mental health has got much better too.
“I’ve also got a lot more energy and definitely proved to myself that I don’t need to do as much cardio and burn myself out.”
Here, Erika speaks about how her trainer’s expertise helped her get twice the results from half the gym time, and why lifting weights no longer feels daunting.
What was your motivation to partner with Ultimate Performance?
I first heard about Ultimate Performance on Instagram. I’d been looking for personal trainers for a while and noticed that clients got excellent results here.
I had my 40th birthday coming up, so I was motivated to make a change and get into the best shape of my life. I put a lot of time into working out, but I wasn’t getting the results I was striving for.
Before you started working with your trainer at U.P., what did your training look like?
I would train probably six or seven days a week, predominantly doing cardio work. I did a lot of running and HIIT training.
I was probably overtraining if I’m being completely honest, which I why I wanted to try something different.
I would never go in the weight section in the gym. I felt a little bit daunted by it, to be honest. I wasn’t sure what I was doing, but since coming to U.P. I feel much more confident lifting weights.
How would you compare yourself now to when you first walked through the doors at U.P.?
I feel much more confident in myself now, especially lifting weights. My sleep has improved, and I feel as if my mental health has got much better too.
I’ve also got a lot more energy now and definitely proved to myself that I don’t need to do as much cardio and burn myself out.
How has your training program improved your life outside of the gym?
My diet has always been relatively healthy, but I’d go in cycles. Sometimes it would be really healthy, then other times it wouldn’t be so great.
Alcohol also played quite a big factor. I was drinking excessively before coming to U.P., but my trainer has helped me clean up my diet and understand the importance of macros.
I think drinking alcohol stalled my progress and was the reason why I didn’t see my appearance improve.
What was the most powerful lesson you’ve learnt from your trainer?
I think the most important thing for me was understanding the basics. I thought I’d be doing a whole host of new exercises and my diet would be completely different to what I was used to. But actually, I just needed to clean up my diet and understand how much I should be eating – it wasn’t that complicated.
In terms of the training, again, it was about mastering the basics. I was doing the fundamentals over and over again, which helped me see results. I’ve gone from training six or seven days a week, to three or four at U.P – and proved to myself that I don’t need to do as much cardio and burn myself out. I’m training far less now, which has had a positive impact on me on my family.
Tell us about the physical results that you have achieved?
I came to U.P. with a clear idea of what I wanted to achieve. I wanted to get some definition in my abs and have a flat stomach – because that’s always been a problem area for me. I’d never show my stomach off.
Now, my entire body shape has changed, and my clothes fit me so much more comfortably. I feel more confident when I go shopping and I’ll even wear crop tops to the gym, which I’ve never done before.
Would you recommend U.P. to people who want to invest in their own health and fitness?
The atmosphere at U.P. is great, I absolutely love it. I love coming to the gym. Everyone knows your name and the journey that you’re on.
I would recommend U.P. to friends and family because it’s an investment in your own personal health. You can learn a lot from coming here and apply it to your own training.
I’m the happiest I’ve ever been so I’d recommend it to anyone.
