44-year-old company director David had been on a rollercoaster journey with his health after rupturing his appendix in 2010.
He described the inflammation it caused as ‘poisoning’ his body. He would feel lethargic and low on energy, and had to go through seven surgeries in 12 years to fix it.

Here, David speaks about how his trainer developed an effective, bespoke plan which made his training manageable and enjoyable, and the significance of his trainer’s endless nutritional knowledge.
What was your motivation to start training with Ultimate Performance?
I’ve had seven abdominal surgeries and multiple gastrointestinal issues over the last 12 years, so your advice has been absolutely invaluable as far as I’m concerned. After my appendix ruptured in 2010, it’s been a roller coaster ride ever since.
For two years of that 12-year period, I still had my appendix inside of me, poisoning me before it was taken out. You can imagine the inflammation I had going on down there. I often felt lethargic and sluggish. So generally, I felt unhealthy and it wasn’t from a lack of trying to diet or exercise in the last 12 years.
How did you find the experience of working with your U.P. trainer?
I went through a range of emotions, from dreading a split squat to the exhilaration of doing one pull-up. My trainer has helped me overcome pain, stiffness, lack of mobility and cracking bones, you name it. The process has just been something I can’t really put into words.
Did you find the elite equipment at U.P. was pivotal in your transformation?
From a gym perspective, the equipment is just insane. I sent a photo of the gym to a friend of mine who’s been bodybuilding for around 30 years. He was blown away by the attention to detail and the range of machines. U.P. seem to have a machine for absolutely every single muscle that you want to isolate, which I really liked.
How much has your trainer’s nutritional advice supported your transformation?
My trainer’s advice on nutrition has been invaluable as far as I’m concerned. I’ve learned so much along the way. I don’t know if it’s a requirement for every trainer to have this kind of education, but my trainer’s Master’s degree in nutrition has definitely helped given his authority and knowledge of the topic.
In terms of overall results, what have you achieved while working with U.P.?
I’ve lost 13kg, but more importantly I can see my abs – which is something I’ve not been able to do since 2010. I can do six proper pull-ups now, whereas I could not do a single one when I first started. I distinctly remember not being able to even get off the ground. I play football every Saturday. That’s something I’ve been continuing regardless of U.P.
One of my teammates who hadn’t seen me for a few months said to me, “Good lord David, you look like you’ve lost some weight. You’re so much quicker than you used to be.” Small comments like that are just a pleasant, nice little ego-booster when you’re on the field.
Have you noticed any changes in your day-to-day life now you have a completely new physique?
100%. I hadn’t paid attention to my clothing during COVID. I had a Denver trip for business a week ago, which was my first for around two years. When I went to my wardrobe, I found nothing fits anymore. Everything was so baggy because I’d lost six inches around the waist. I’ve probably lost around an inch around my neck size as well, so my shirts were baggy and loose. I had to quickly scramble and buy some more clothes for myself.
Also, I haven’t specifically been avoiding the beach, but I used to play beach volleyball quite a lot and I haven’t been for quite some time. Now, I’m looking forward to going to the beach this summer. Overall, the return on investment joining U.P. is just insane. Just do it. That’s what I keep saying!
