When David started a transformation at Ultimate Performance, he singled out Hugh Jackman’s physique as the ‘look’ he wanted to emulate.

At 49 years old, father David was a similar age to the X-Men star and he was serious about working out too.

His diet was good, he regularly trained at his local gym doing cardio, but the results didn’t quite equal the effort he was putting in.

So coming to U.P. was his chance to see how far he could push himself under the guidance of a world-class expert.

Over 13 weeks David cut down to 8% body fat and built over 4kg (9lbs) of lean mass to get a body even Wolverine actor Jackman would be impressed with.

“At the beginning, when they asked who do you want to look like, a similarly aged guy Hugh Jackman came to mind.  

“I guess now the only thing I’m missing out on is the knives on the hands, really. Everything else seems to be getting there! 

“My son takes the mickey at me sometimes. He is often telling me ‘come on, dad, take your top off. Let’s see how you’re getting on!’ which got a little bit embarrassing, but it’s quite nice in some respects when you do actually take it off, and you’ve got the muscles that are building there.” 

David was fairly fit before U.P. as well. He was a regular gym-goer, but goal-based workouts were not part of his fitness strategy.

So while he more or less ate healthily, it was all based on guesswork and didn’t follow a logical plan.

“The main purpose of coming to U.P. was to push myself to see where I could get to with all the right ingredients in terms of the training, food, etc. 

“Another reason was the fact that when I’ve been training before, I’d got small injuries and some pain after exercising.  

“I didn’t know whether I was doing it right, and I had a bit of a lower back problem as well. The doctor said it’s just part of life, and I thought it can’t really be that, can it? So I wanted to take up resistance training and learn how to do it in the right manner.”   

David took to weight training immediately. Working out with his trainer and fastidiously focusing on technique and precise exercise execution, he had an ‘Aha!’ moment right at the beginning of his journey.

Aches and pains disappeared, and results started becoming visible within a few short weeks.

“The main thing is that different lifts target different muscle group areas. I’ve learned how to lift in the most efficient manner reducing the risk of any possible injury to my body. 

“One of the biggest things I understand now is nutrition. Now I look at food, and I can almost see what the calorie content is. I know what the macros are approximately in the food, and you understand what that’s going to do to my body, so that’s been massive.”

David’s transformation wasn’t about losing weight. He wasn’t overweight and was already following a regular workout regime.

What he wanted was to build muscle mass and improve his body composition, and U.P.’s targeted approach got him over the plateau and across the finishing line.

“When I first came in, I was around the 71kg (156.5lbs) mark. The body fat was about 11%. We got that down to 8%, and we ended up with about four and a half kilo increase in lean muscle mass.  

“I could feel it in my body; I could feel that I was getting stronger. That just shows that the combination of the correct resistance training with the correct nutrition and the correct mindset is all it takes. There’s no magic pill; you just follow the rules, and you get the results. 

“I’ve learned that through putting effort into having a goal, being shown the right way to do it, with some mental strength and the support, you can achieve whatever goal that you want to achieve.” 

When the lockdown started, David was worried that he would lose all the progress he had made.
But U.P. pivoted successfully to virtual workouts and made sure that he not just stayed stable but kept inching towards his goals.

“When the offer of home sessions was available, I was a bit dubious. I wasn’t sure how much could be done at home, but I couldn’t actually walk after the first session. My arms were ringing on the pull-ups!  

“It’s just a new experience and a new way, and as it happened, I lost 3kg (7lbs) within two weeks at home.” 

David says that the ‘bang for your buck’ you get from each and every training session at U.P. really has no equal.

But the real bonus has been learning the skills to continue progressing and getting stronger for life.

“All in all, the amount of work that you end up doing and the effectiveness within the hour that I’m at U.P. is incomparable.

“It was a 12-week period, but life’s not for 12 weeks. I want to make sure that I’m strong – I’m strong for my son, I can play with him, I can kick footballs around with him, we can go climbing together and also that I can teach him the benefits of training.”
