Dave’s back pain meant he was missing out on valuable time playing with his son.
He was in agony from the moment he woke up, admitting it often took 10 minutes to get out of bed.
It reached a point where Dave couldn’t even pick his nine-year-old boy up because of a bulging disc in his back. He was desperate to join in with his activities and have fun with him again before he grew up.
He set out to find a personal training program that would help him drop weight and bring him closer to his son. He approached Ultimate Performance to lead him on that journey.
He’s now in the best shape of his life after working one-to-one with his U.P. personal trainer, dropping 17kg and relieving his crippling back pain.

Not only is Dave’s waist tighter than ever, but he also feels strong and confident in his body. Most importantly, he can keep up with his son and join in with his newest hobby – skateboarding.

Here, Dave speaks about how his agonising morning routine is now a thing of the past, why his new lifestyle has inspired his colleagues, and how he’s become closer to his nine-year-old son.
What was your motivation to begin working with U.P.?
I wanted to get fitter because I couldn’t get out of bed. I had a whole routine that took me about 10 minutes of rolling over, pushing myself up and stretching.
I had a bulging disc in my back, so I wanted to get that sorted. I’ve got a nine-year-old son and I couldn’t pick him up or play with him. If we were playing and he punched me, I would honestly fall to the ground.

Tell us about how your life has changed now that you’re in shape?
Working with U.P. has had a massive impact. I can now pick my son up and carry him. We have started to do a lot more with each other.
He’s taken up skateboarding recently so I can run alongside him and make sure he doesn’t fall off.
I can also carry him on my shoulders, which is crazy because he’s about 40kg so he’s not light! My transformation has been great, me and my son can actually have fun again.

What has the response been like from your close friends and family?
When I went home at Christmas, everyone said “what’s happened? You’re half the person you used to be”. But what I like more is the impact it has had on people you see every day. They notice your change and start to think about their own physical well-being.
At one point, half the office that I currently work in was on a healthy meal plan. They changed their whole diet to try to lose weight and get in shape. They also started walking and going to the gym downstairs in our building. It’s amazing how proving you can get in shape and talking about it inspires people.

Have you tried to lose weight and get in shape in the past?
I tried to lose weight before coming to U.P., but it got to a point where I had a mental block and I just couldn’t make any progress. When I joined U.P. I dropped two or three kilograms in the first few weeks and that mental block was lifted.
I had continual support from my trainer, who would check in with me every day. He always kept me on track and told me not to make mistakes with my diet and lifestyle. But if I did, he told me not to worry and keep going. It was that support that really helped me succeed.
