Mike’s motivation for losing an incredible 75lbs (34kg) was his daughter.
He was successful in business, but for years 47-year-old Mike had neglected his health and his body. He says he felt like a ‘walking heart attack’.
The turning point was when his little girl asked for a tennis racket and football for Christmas.
Mike wanted to be an active father, but he knew inside that he wasn’t fit enough even to kick a football around with her.
It was at that moment he knew something big had to change.
Despite nearly 30 years away from the gym, Mike embarked upon a body transformation journey at Ultimate Performance that has fundamentally changed his life.
He has gone from being lethargic, unfit and low on confidence, to becoming active, outgoing and back to the old Mike, who is the life and soul of the party and more than able to keep up with his daughter.
“I feel great – absolutely full of energy. I never thought I’d live to see the day when I’m getting up at 5:30 am in the morning, stretching and going out for a run or a walk. That’s been great.
“It’s changed my social life. I never used to go out much. If I did, I would always stand at the back of the room and keep myself to myself.
“Now, the old happy smiling Mike has come back again.”
Mike has come an incredibly long way in a short space of time.
Before U.P. he says he felt ‘rubbish’ as his diet and sedentary lifestyle took their toll on him.
“I felt like a walking heart attack. I was lethargic all the time.
“I didn’t really have a lot of self-confidence and I didn’t really have any motivation at all.”
But he found all the motivation he needed to make a change for his daughter.
Something she said to him made everything ‘click’ to start taking care of himself again.
“My motivation initially for starting with U.P. was primarily down to my daughter.
“I spend a lot of time with my daughter, and I love spending time with her.
“But the two things she asked for last Christmas were a tennis racket and a football.
“I started thinking to myself ‘can I even run around and play tennis with her? Can I get onto the football field and kick a ball with her?’
“It made me think that it was about time then to start to do something about it.”
Mike committed to taking action – for himself and his daughter.
He had a long way to go, but walking through the doors at U.P., he knew this was the place, and the team, to help get him to where he wanted to be.
One of the first things Mike was able to affect positive change on was his diet and lifestyle.
For years, he had lived off junk food and alcohol and done little or no exercise.
“My diet and lifestyle before U.P. were pretty simple really.
“My diet was beer and takeaways. My lifestyle was work, drink, food, sleep, repeat. It was that simple.
“I had nothing else going on other than when my daughter was staying over. It was pretty sedentary really.”
Getting Mike being active again every day, walking more and getting in control of his diet with an eating plan full of lean meats, vegetables and healthy fats made a big difference.
He noticed results within a matter of weeks, and by week 5 he was already 22lbs (10kg) down.
“I started seeing results pretty quickly.
“There was an awful lot to lose, so I guess it dropped off quickly.
“Within the first three or four weeks, I could notice a huge difference in the way that I looked.
“Then over the next 12 weeks and the work that we put in to keep that up, we ended up getting to a point where I could notice a drastic amount of difference.”
Having a focussed training plan really helped maximise his fat loss process.
Mike’s trainer helped him train efficiently, effectively and safely around many long-standing injuries and limitations.
“After years of abuse on my downhill mountain bike, a separated clavicle and God knows how many pins and plates in my elbow on my left side, the help and guidance I’ve had from my trainer has proved that anything is possible!
“When I joined U.P., I had a broken finger, 6 months in I had a trapped nerve in my neck (from sleeping, believe it or not!) and then after 9 months, I fractured my coccyx snowboarding!
“Yet there’s not been a session missed, as everyone has been adapted to my exact position at that exact moment.
“That, in my opinion, is why a PT is more than worth the money they are paid.”
Nothing was going to stop Mike from achieving his goal of being a fit and healthy father.
His dedication and commitment under the guidance of his trainer helped him achieve remarkable results.
After 40 weeks, he is 75lbs (34kg) lighter, he has more than halved his body fat and is infinitely stronger and fitter than when he started.
But his results were so much more than numbers on a scale.
It has changed every aspect of his life.
“First and foremost, I can fit into clothes that fit properly, which has been great.
“I feel fitter and healthier. I can go for a nice long walk, or even a run now which I couldn’t do before.
“My hair feels thicker and fuller, my skin feels a lot more supple, a lot of my lines around my eyes have gone, and I just feel all-around healthier.
“My whole aspect of eating takeaways and having a drink has totally changed. It was a habit that has now long gone. I’m happy to get rid of that.”
Thinking back, Mike realises how much of an impact being overweight was actually having on his life.
“Before, I couldn’t really do the things I wanted to anymore.
“I certainly couldn’t do snowboarding, which I love, but I’ve not done for a long, long time.
“I couldn’t play and do the physical activities that my daughter wanted me to do with her.
“As far as confidence was concerned, I didn’t pay attention to the way I looked or dressed.
“My confidence was pretty low, even though I actually run my own business which is pretty successful.
“I wasn’t outgoing at all. It was a pretty boring life, really.”
Fast forward 40 weeks and he believes the old Mike is back.
“I am the life and soul of the party. I’m the first one on the dance floor throwing some funky moves around.
“The great thing is that I don’t even have to go out and have a drink to socialise. Everybody understands that’s the case
“I would much rather go for a run or an extra session down at the gym, rather than going to the pub for a pint, which has changed my whole outlook on life.”
