A breast cancer survivor, Helen was acutely aware of her unhealthy lifestyle and craved a change.  

She had been making modest lifestyle adjustments for the last couple of years and now felt ready – and impatient –to achieve more.

Hearing of work colleagues who experienced life-changing success with U.P., Helen wanted to experience it for herself. 

Not even the coronavirus lockdown could stop her from completing a remarkable transformation alongside her U.P. trainer with the help of virtual training. 

 The weight just went so very quickly. So, for me, seeing and feeling differences was immediate. So far I have lost 12kg (26lbs), and it just feels really good.

Before beginning her journey at U.P., Helen’s own health and wellbeing weren’t being nurtured in the way they should be.  

In fact, as a mother-of-two with competing priorities of family life, career and work travel, her health often came last.  

“As you get older, things change and not necessarily in a good way. I was working a lot and travelling a lot.  

I have two teenage sons and a husband, so time and work-life balance was always a challenge.  

I was putting myself at the bottom of the pile; not in a sacrificial way, it’s just that there was so much going on that I never made time for exercise. 

“My job is quite sedentary. So I am in the office and at my desk, all the time and I just felt this wasn’t the right way forward. I wanted to learn about nutrition, get fitter and stronger on a sustainable basis.”

Helen’s lifestyle before U.P. wasn’t particularly healthy, and she knew it. She was inconsistent with exercise and barely moved during the day.  

While her diet was generally clean and healthy, it was not balanced or focused on weight loss.  

However, over the past few years, she had been working on improving areas of her lifestyle that would support better health and wellbeing.  

This included giving up alcohol which, while tough at first, proved to be a catalyst for going after even bigger health goals.

“If you had told me I would stop drinking two years ago, I would have said Nway! Not with my job, not with my social circle. No way! 

“Then it just happened, and I felt I was ready to do something else. Also, I had a health scare a few years back when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. All this propelled me to seek a higher level of fitness.”    

Exercise, then, became a big focus for Helen, but she wasn’t getting the results she wanted for all her efforts. 

“I had done 3-4 months of personal training with another trainer at another gym, and it just wasn’t hitting the spot for me.  

It wasn’t a holistic programme and didn’t have the integrated support I was looking for. I didn’t have the full-on accountability that I have here.  

U.P. is expensive; it was a big commitment. And this also became a driver for me. I said to myself ‘If I do this, I will do it properly; there will be no half-heartedness here.”

It helped that the Covid-19 crisis reduced her travelling and helped her get into the groove. 

“I started looking at my calendar the night before and deciding – where am I going to eat, what am I going to eat, and I started carrying a tin of tuna in my handbag!  

The 10,000 steps were a requirement, and I would find myself walking the streets at 9 o’clock after dinner. It got better when I started incorporating it into my life.
