Blaine’s worrying high blood pressure was filling him with stress and anxiety.
Looking in the mirror every morning reminded him how far he’d let his health slip since his twenties. All his energy, confidence and pride had slowly disappeared.
Tipping the scales at almost 100kg, 34-year-old Blaine’s weight was affecting all corners of his life. Worst of all was feeling out of breath trying to keep up with the ‘passion’ in his favourite mambo and Latin dancing sessions.
Ultimate Performance have helped him lose 21kg and ease fears about his blood pressure.

Here, Blaine speaks about how his program helped manage his stress, the simplicity of his diet plan, and why U.P. is a long-term investment for anyone.
What motivated you to start training with U.P.?
My blood pressure was really high and I knew I was overweight. At one stage, my blood pressure reached 150, which I was very anxious about. I couldn’t handle the stress all that well and ended up feeling tired and depressed pretty much all of the time.
That was reflected in my before and after photos. Before, I had the face of someone who wasn’t confident, didn’t have energy and was not proud of himself. I looked at myself in the mirror and felt terrible.
How do you feel about yourself now that you’ve finished your transformation?
I think the best feeling is putting on a shirt and seeing how good you look and how happy you feel. I’ve had positive feedback from people and I think I’ve inspired others to start their own fitness journey. I feel like a completely different person and I can handle my stress a lot better now.
I also had a reoccurring shoulder problem and a painful back injury before I started training with U.P. I don’t struggle with either of these problems now. I’ve not felt pain in my back for a while, so I’m definitely a lot more functional than I was before.
What were your goals before you started working with your trainer, and have you achieved them?
My main goal was to be proud of myself and feel confident – that was the ultimate target. How I looked was just a side effect, but that has been equally amazing and I love my physique now.
Compared to when I started, I’m much more confident and have become the person I wanted to be. People are telling me I’ve got so much more energy, so I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
How important was your trainer in helping you achieve your results?
I’ve never experienced anything like U.P. before. The training environment is amazing and you’re surrounded by brilliant trainers. Previously, I was a CrossFit fanatic, but I believe that was causing a lot of my injuries.
My U.P. trainer took my injuries into account, and I never felt scared to come into my next session and push myself. Nutrition-wise, it was basic and easy to follow. I enjoyed the simplicity and didn’t have to worry about my diet. I really enjoyed it.
What other benefits did you feel from your transformation?
I do mambo and Latin dancing. Before starting at U.P. I couldn’t move as fast, and my knees and back were getting sore. I felt like a blob on the dance floor.
Now, I’m totally different. I can keep up with what they call the ‘passion’ behind the dance and I’m attending a lot more classes. I’m also going to more social nights, which I didn’t have the energy to go to in the past because of my low confidence.
Finally, did you get the return on investment you expected?
100%. The U.P. team have transformed me as a human. It’s an investment now that will add years to my life and save me spending money on hospital bills in the future. There are so many great people at U.P, it’s something special and I wish more people knew about it.
