46-year-old Ben hoped his spin bike routine throughout lockdown would deliver visible changes to his body.
Nine months of hard work got him fitter – but he was disappointed with the physical results.
Ben wanted an effective training plan which eliminated fat and gave him a muscular physique that no spin bike could.
That’s exactly what he got working with his personal trainer at Ultimate Performance for 12 short weeks.
After initially being intimidated by the prospect of resistance training, Ben lost fat, built muscle and is now the strongest he has ever been.
His doctor even told him he was the healthiest, fittest person that has visited his office in the last five years, following a routine check-up.

“My goal was to continue that fitness journey I’d been on for the previous nine months. I wanted to do it in a more effective and precise way as opposed to sitting at home spinning on pedals.
“Working with U.P. has left me feeling great about my health. I have never been a morning person and now I jump out of bed. I haven’t heard my alarm clock go off in forever.
“I’m the lightest I have ever been, but I’ve also never been this strong. One of the things I tell people is, ‘it’s really not that hard. You just do what you’re told.’”
Here, Ben speaks about how the atmosphere around the U.P. gym promoted a results-based environment like no other, and how his trainer made him comfortable with weight training in a matter of weeks.

What was your motivation to join Ultimate Performance?
The freedom that came from not being in the office and spending more time at home affected me. That freedom turned into enjoying a lot of wine and maybe falling a little bit out of shape.
However, I started cooking a lot more and found myself enjoying fitness. I got myself a Peloton bike and started working out, but it wasn’t affecting my physique in the way I thought it would, given how many calories I was burning.
Somebody mentioned to me that they had a good experience at U.P. and I should try it out. My goal was to continue that fitness journey I’d been on for the previous nine months. I wanted to do it in a more effective and precise way as opposed to sitting at home spinning on pedals.
What were your first impressions of the Ultimate Performance gym and your trainer?
Seeing the sheer volume of elite machines and equipment was new to me. It was exciting, but a little bit intimidating at the same time. However, I quickly realised how different U.P. was compared to other gyms because everybody is on their own program. Everyone is trying to make themselves better. They’re all coming from a place they don’t want to be and trying to lose weight or gain muscle.
It’s like no other gym I’ve been in. In the past, I’ve been dragged to weightlifting gyms and I found myself feeling very intimidated. I felt like people were looking at me when I’m using light weights and I wasn’t comfortable. At U.P., it’s like a community. You see people cheering for each other when they’re pushing the prowler down the track for example. It’s just great. It’s a very encouraging environment.

Following your transformation, how do you feel about yourself both physically and mentally?
I feel great about my health. I have never been a morning person and now I jump out of bed. I haven’t heard my alarm clock go off in forever. I’m ready to tackle the day, run, cycle, lift weights, whatever it is, my transformation has left me with so much more energy.
It’s also great being on the beach and not walking around with a flabby gut, that was a really nice feeling. I’m the lightest I have ever been, but I’ve also never been this strong. One of the things I tell people is, “it’s really not that hard. You just do what you’re told.”
Tell us about the environment at Ultimate Performance, and how that helped motivate you?
I think it’s great. It’s usually before or after a session when I was sitting in the locker room. Everybody else is doing the same thing and there’s a nice mix of clients in there, where we know some names and we’ve grabbed coffees afterwards.
Small things like that really motivate you. It’s nice to chat with other clients, because everybody’s very like-minded, focused and committed. Sharing those experiences have been very healthy.

Overall, what benefits have you noticed in your day-to-day life?
I think there’s an emotional feedback loop stemming from my transformation. I feel good about myself, I feel good about what I’m doing, I feel good about what I’ve achieved. I think that’s feeding into how I feel physically, and vice versa.
That has been great. I also now don’t have clothes that fit me anymore. Most of my clothes are falling off me. At some point, when all my new clothes fit right, I think I might walk a little taller and feel a little stronger when I’m out.
