As a busy working mother-of-six, Alice thought she was ‘past it’ and feared her best years were behind her.
She had slowly been gaining weight since turning 40 when she almost died from a severe bout of pneumonia which ravaged her muscle mass and left her weak.
Undergoing a full knee replacement operation made matters worse. The pain from her knee made it tough to exercise, play with her children and lead the active lifestyle she needed to get back in shape.
Alice, who lives near Cleveland, Ohio, had tried every DVD workout and diet around to stop her weight gain, but nothing worked to get the dramatic results she craved.
When her husband learned that Ultimate Performance had launched a new online coaching program for women built around weight training, Alice knew this was the right path to get real results.

“I’m 50! I know it’s kind of old, but I don’t feel 50. I feel like a rock star! I feel great! I’m living my best mom life.
“You can literally change the way your body is shaped! You’re not stuck with what you were born with, you can change it!
“If I can do this program and get results and feel this great about myself at 50, running a house with six kids, anyone can.”
Alice started her transformation to lose weight and feel more confident in clothes as her 50th birthday approached.
“I was fat,” she says. “I realised last summer that I was looking for clothes that hid what I looked like, not because I liked the clothes or liked the way they looked on me.
“It seemed like I had an active lifestyle and my diet wasn’t horrible, but I was still continuing to gain weight, so I thought that’s just what I had to settle for, for life.
“I thought the way I looked I was stuck with. It was very frustrating.”
This had been going on for nearly 10 years.
Her slow and steady weight gain had started as she recovered from a bout of pneumonia that almost claimed her life.
“I was pretty sick. I was on life support.
“I was on a ventilator for 10 or 11 days.
“I lost 20lbs over that time – all my muscle.
“My legs were teeny and skinny. I lost a ton of muscle mass and that messed with my metabolism.”
Her recovery was tough. She tried to start running again but wasn’t doing any resistance training with weights to build up the strength and muscle in her weakened legs again.
“I just destroyed my knee that year. I was 41 and I had a couple of knee surgeries.
“Then I was 44 or 45 and the doctor said they just needed to replace my knee. I have an artificial knee.
“I couldn’t get out and do anything with the kids. No walking, no playing in the yard. It was just too painful. I had a full year of rehabbing with it.”
This all compounded Alice’s weight gain. No matter what she tried, things just got worse.
“I never did any lifting. You name a video program or a fad diet and I’ve tried it. They didn’t work or I would maybe lose 5lbs. Nothing fantastic or body altering.”
Then she found the LiveUP Bikini Body Program and everything changed.
At first, Alice was worried about the effect lifting weights would have on her body.
She feared lifting weights would make her big and bulky.
“Weight training for ladies is not really what’s advertised.
“When you flip on the TV you see other diets and exercises that are popular and none of them involve weight training.
“They involve aerobics or diets with points or no carbs. It’s not out there or commonly known for ladies that you can do weight training.
“I actually thought I was going to get big and muscular, so I was sceptical about it. But I’m not getting bigger, I’m getting smaller, which is awesome!”
Despite never having lifted weights before in her life, Alice says the learning curve was quick.
“With the exercises, I feel nothing is tricky or hard to figure out. If I can figure it out, anyone can.
“The gym is just three times a week. It’s literally an hour or an hour and 20 minutes a time. It’s very doable.”
Alice has access to a library of exercise videos, the guidance of UP trainers and the support of hundreds of other women training towards the same goal on the LiveUP community forum.
“I don’t have other ladies in my area who are doing weight lifting yet. So the support on the forum is invaluable.
“The ladies are fantastic. I have a couple of friendships going on with ladies from around the world.
“You need that support from like-minded people to keep you going and motivated.”
Alice was amazed by how quickly her body changed training with weights three times a week.
“I keep all my progress photos. When you look at where you first started and where you are now, you almost wouldn’t believe it!
“The difference even in just the first two weeks was huge.”
Now Alice is on phase 5 of the program, which changes every month, and is astounded by the results so far.
“I’ve lost almost 25lbs of fat since I started. And I’ve gained muscle. I was wearing a size 10. Now I’m wearing a size 4!
“Everything is too big now! I’m having to buy all new clothes. My shoes are the only things that still fit!”
Alice is incredibly proud of her new body and can’t wait until summer to be able to wear a whole new wardrobe.
“I’m going to be able to buy things where I won’t be ashamed to show off my figure because doing the weight lifting, it’s changing my body.
“It might already be better now than it has in my entire life. Even in my twenties!
“I told my husband the other day that my butt is looking the best it’s looked ever.
“I said ‘is this even my butt? Feel how firm it is!’
“I thought last summer that maybe this is the body I’m stuck with. Maybe this is as good as it’s going to get.
“I would have never thought that at the age of 50 you would have the best butt of your life.”
Alice says the best thing about the program is how simple but effective it is – from the training to the meal plan.
It was easy to find 3 hours in her week to exercise and swapping her old diet, which was heavy on wine and cheese, to four balanced and delicious meals a day was a breeze.
“The diet was super-easy. When I’m making my plate of food, it’s literally just meat, veg, fat and fruit. It’s as simple as that.
“People at work think I must be cutting carbs. But I eat fruit twice a day and on my workout days I get to eat two portions of carbs, so I don’t feel deprived in any way.
“It doesn’t even feel like a diet. I eat all the time. I’m happy with that because I like food, I like to eat and I have plenty of food to choose from!
“I have banana chocolate protein pancakes with berries every Saturday morning. It doesn’t sound like a diet! But I’m losing weight.”
Alice is excited to see how much more she can achieve on her LiveUP plan.
“I used to dread working out and would never want to work out.
“Now I can’t wait to work out because I know I’m going to feel fantastic.
“I love lifting weights, it might be addicting!”
