But at Ultimate Performance nothing is impossible – and this is something UP client, Varun found out after forging his dream physique in just 9 weeks.
The 27-year-old head of business development wasn’t happy with his body but thought he would never be able to achieve this shredded physique and six-pack abs.
But working with his personal trainer with an effective training and nutrition strategy helped him achieve his ideal body in a matter of weeks.
“I used to look at magazine covers and think that was a world away for me. It’s amazing to wake up in the morning and look at what I have achieved – it literally astounds me, he says.”
Varun, who is now in the best shape of his life, adds: “I smashed my goal of 9% body fat with my abs showing and a brilliantly athletic physique. I felt more confident on the beach, and people haven’t stopped asking me how I did it.”
Varun’s incredible dedication and hard work in achieving this stunning 9-week transformation means he has been named our City Client of the Month for June.
Here he explains what motivated him to start, how he achieved it and what he thinks of the results he previously thought were simply not possible…
What were your motivations going into your UP body transformation and what were your expectations?
I had read the book with Joe Warner, and so I had a vague idea of the type of diet, but the intensity of the programme I perhaps underestimated.
Varun had previously undertaken a 12 week transformation at UP. His fitness had slipped over summer, so he returned this year to regain the great physique he once had.
“The first 12 weeks was to get in shape for my brother’s stag (Ibiza) and wedding.”
“This year was for my best friend’s stag (Marbella) and weddings this summer.”
“I also had a personal goal of getting to that dream shredded body (less than 9% body fat) to prove that I could do it, to myself and to the world.”
Can you tell me how you were feeling both physically and mentally before starting your transformation?
“I didn’t realise I had that much body fat. I think most people underestimate how chunky they actually are under the hood – as I did not look visibly big.”
“I felt okay, but not overly pleased with my appearance; I was probably in denial about what I actually looked like naked.”
“Mentally, however, I was ready for a big and drastic change. I had been training for some time before so I was definitely ready to take it to the next level with UP.”
What was your diet and lifestyle like before you started your transformation?
“I thought it was better than it actually was. I used to depend on “healthy snacks” during my 3 pm work slump which weren’t actually that good for me.”
“I used to have full-fat everything and enjoy eating and drinking without any sort of portion control.”
“I definitely used to enjoy my whisky and cokes, and used to have quick breakfasts of toast.”
How did your diet and lifestyle change when you started with UP?
“Everything changed. I would start my days off powerfully with a big protein breakfast of lamb/salmon fillet, green veggies, nuts and berries.”
“I actually grew to really look forward to it and depend on having a big breakfast like this.”
“In fact, I found I would struggle to function without having my meat/veggie meals that kept me fuelled every 3-4 hours.”
I found myself feeling fitter and healthier. My skin certainly started to become clearer and more colourful.
“I found starting off Monday mornings 9 am with ultra-heavy deadlifts was an incredible set up for the working week.”
“To be honest, the UP sessions did tire me out sometimes, and I certainly did worry the nights before some of my conditioning sessions, but it was all worth it in the end.”
“I also found myself making more subconscious decisions about what to order in restaurants and to plan my life/diet and social life much smarter.”
What effect did this have on your health, performance, lifestyle and energy levels inside and outside the gym?
“I certainly felt healthier and more energetic straight after my workouts.”
“It was great to have my workouts right before heading into the office.”
My overall energy was through the roof with the ability to keep going constantly around the clock.
How did you find the training and did it fit around your busy lifestyle?
“I certainly did not expect the level of pain I would feel during pendulum squats and prowler; they were sensations I had never felt before!”
“I really liked the fact that we hit multiple muscle groups and more than once a week. I literally felt my body changing every few days in front of my own eyes.”
“It fit well into my lifestyle as the gym was so close to my work, and my trainer was always available at 9 am so I could get it out of the way and get on with the day.”
What were the results like after your transformation?
“Pretty incredible. I think the 200-plus ‘likes’ on social media speaks for itself haha!”

“I felt more confident on the beach, and people haven’t stopped asking me how I did it – not to forget drawing a fair bit of attention at the Marbella pool parties too!”
What were the most important things you learned during your UP programme and what really worked for you in helping make your transformation?
I learned about how important it was to work hard on my goals and in pursuit of my dream.
“I also learned to grind through the pain as only there is where true gains are made.”
“Food preparation and shopping, as well as analysing what I ate was a crucial learning for me. It has stuck with me in every diet choice I make.”
How has doing this transformation changed you and do you think it will benefit you going forward?
“It has changed my perception of what I believe is possible for me.”
“When I first walked into the gym, I didn’t think that in just 9 weeks time I could look the way I look now.”
“I used to look at magazine covers and think that was a world away for me.”

Would you recommend UP?
“Absolutely. It is not cheap but I do think when you commit, you have to go all in with your heart and soul.”
It is life-changing if you give it your 100%. It’s unlike any other type of personal training or gym out there.
“Now I’m finished, I’m trying to work out how to even match the level of training I got there. People have no idea the type of stuff that happens there!”
