Amber-before-and-after-front-900 Ultimate Performance

After just nine weeks of training with U.P., Amber has never felt happier or more confident with her body.

She loves the hard-earned definition in her shoulders, arms and abs that came from her personalised diet and weight training program.

It’s a figure she has struggled to achieve for years on her own, trying every different diet, fitness class and personal trainer around.

Her weight had slowly crept up over the past five years and with a holiday coming up in Arizona she wanted to feel confident in her bikini.

Motivated to get in shape for her holiday, and determined to make lasting changes to her lifestyle, Amber started her transformation at U.P.

Nine weeks later and she looks amazing, losing 9kg and a third of her body fat, and learning the tools to stay in shape for life.

“The results were incredible!,” says Amber, who is the co-founder of a London interior design business.

“During your program, you already see the weight on the scale drop, you notice your overall body measurements going down, and clothes start to become looser.

“However, it isn’t until you take those final photographs that you get confronted with the actual change you brought to your body. It was truly amazing and everyone around me noticed as well.”

Amber explains how she achieved her nine-week body, the major changes to her diet and lifestyle that made such a big impact, and the key lessons she has learned on training and nutrition that have made maintaining her new figure simple.

What were your motivations going into the transformation?

I had heard about U.P. through a friend of mine in Amsterdam who had recently completed a 16-week program. He was extremely enthusiastic and had showed me his before and after photos. I was truly impressed.

Not only have I always been sceptical of before and after advertisements in magazines and on social media, I also did not believe a transformation of that magnitude was possible in such a short space of time.

His results were my motivation going into the program and his radical change and amazing increase in self-confidence set the bar for actual results much higher than I what I would have ever thought possible.

How were you feeling both physically and mentally before starting with U.P.?

I have never been very confident with my body and the way I looked. I’ve been on many many diets in my life and have been through almost just as many training programs, both with group exercise classes or one-on-one personal training.

Every time I would lose some weight, I would feel slightly better, but never actually feel comfortable enough to be in a bikini.

What was your diet and lifestyle like before you started your transformation with U.P.?

I have always been quite active, but more in a walking, hiking, biking, pilates way, rather than actually weight lifting or being concerned with muscle definition.

My diet, on the other hand, especially the last couple of years, was very much ‘eat what you like’, quite possibly leading to about 2,500 calories a day.

My diet was balanced in the sense that I would eat my fruit, vegetables and protein, but in addition to this I would also have a piece of cake, a quiche, some pasta, and cornflakes in the mornings with large fruit juices – and this all in one day!

START YOUR OWN BODY TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY

My weight started to increase slowly over the last five years or so, gaining 1-2kg every year consistently. It was certainly getting out of hand!

How did your diet and lifestyle change when you started your transformation with U.P.?

Both my diet and lifestyle changed radically from the first day I started training at U.P. That first week was hard! I dropped my calories and started tracking everything I consumed.

I started to realise on day one that my carbohydrate intake (and fat) were certainly way too high, while proteins were too low.

Also, before starting U.P., I would probably drink alcohol around four times a week and even though I would not say I was in ‘need’ of a glass of wine, it was certainly more of a social thing.

What effect did this have on your health, performance, lifestyle and energy levels?

The changes I felt, especially on an energy level, were dramatic even after a couple of days. All of the sudden I was able to function on 6-7 hours sleep and not even feel tired in the afternoon!

I also started spinning twice a week as the intensity level of my cardio certainly needed to go up, and while I felt I was quite literally going to die within the first 10 minutes of session one, the second round was already much easier.

I started replacing my lunch quiches with a piece of chicken or fish, cereal was replaced by 0% fat Greek yoghurt and some fruit, and I started making myself protein shakes for after every workout.

Nuts and avocado became a delicacy in small amounts (I used to eat a bag of nuts in one sitting, who knew they were so high in calories?) and my fruit juices were replaced with eating actual pieces of fruit. I was still a bit nervous in the beginning to do weight lifting on my own, but over time, and with the guidance of U.P., I became more and more comfortable.

How did you find the training and did it fit around your busy lifestyle?

One thing I certainly learned at U.P. is that if you want to make the time for training and are dedicated to transform your body and lifestyle, you can do it.

I have always been an extremely busy person and barely have the time to watch an hour of TV a week. I am always doing something, whether it is working, walking the dog, or socialising, so it certainly seemed difficult to fit in training 3-4 times a week (plus cardio once or twice a week!).

The truth is, however, that there are certain things you need to give up. For me, this was my social outings. They simply needed to be limited to once (maybe twice) during the first five days of the week, and then keep the weekend night-outs to a reasonable hour. I also limited my travelling in those nine weeks, as both training and eating well were harder when I would be on the road. I knew eventually I would need to work around this but I first needed those building blocks from U.P.

What were the most important things you learned during your journey and what really worked for you in helping you make your transformation?

If you want to change your body, you can change your body, but you do need the right guidance.

I have never experienced anything like the training I did at U.P. before.

ENQUIRE ABOUT HOW U.P. CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS

My personal trainer and mental coach, Reid, was there for me every step of the way.

If I had a question at 11pm on a Saturday evening, I would most likely get a reply within 10 minutes. Especially initially, I needed him to hold me ‘accountable’.

Then once you see the results and once you start reducing those sessions to maybe once a week, you realise you can actually maintain this ‘new figure’ on your own as well, all you needed was someone to show you that you can do it!

I am way more conscious of all the food I consume, and I make sure I get my 12,000 steps in every day (the one thing that is not too difficult, luckily, with a dog!). I also make sure I train at least three times a week and balance my diet so I can have higher calorie days as long as I combine them with lower calorie days.

I do not want to lose the definition U.P. has given me in my shoulders, back, abs and legs. I want to train to maintain and I want to keep my energy levels as high as they have been since I started the program.
