Joyce had been overweight for so many years she never thought life could be different.
Every Monday she would start a new diet, but she had given up and moved on to the next quick fix by Wednesday.
Nothing worked. She didn’t even want to look in the mirror anymore. But it was only when Joyce turned 50 that she decided enough was enough.

Dropping from over 100kg to 76kg has been totally transformative – she can even fit into her old wedding dress for the first time in decades.
“To date, I have lost 26kg. I am fitter than I have been probably for the last 20 years, and I’m fitting back into clothes I haven’t been able to wear for 20 years.
“I love it, it’s amazing! I never thought this was possible.”
Before she started her transformation journey with U.P., Joyce was increasingly noticing the impact of her excess weight in everyday life.
It had reached the point where she needed to do something about it. Turning 50 proved to be a turning point.
“I have always been overweight, so actually, I think it became a status quo for me. But it reached a point where I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin anymore.
“I just didn’t even want to look in a mirror. So, I thought at the age of 50, this would be the moment to take the bull by the horns.”
It wasn’t until she saw the transformation of another woman around her age at Ultimate Performance on social media that a light bulb switched on.
“I heard about U.P. on a Facebook ad I saw whilst going through my posts one day.
“I decided to give it a shot because the profile that I saw was very similar to mine, and so I figured that if it had worked for her, possibly it may work for me too.”
Joyce knew she had a lot to lose and thought her goals were out of the question.
But speaking with the team at U.P. convinced her that with a personalised plan in place and the guidance and support from a dedicated trainer, she could achieve the weight loss results she wanted.
“I never felt judged or that my goals were unrealistic when I joined U.P. I thought my goals were fairly unrealistic, but I was never made to feel like I was expecting too much.
“The fact I have a trainer who follows me and tries to understand me, makes an absolutely huge difference.”
A journey to 26kg weight loss
Joyce was the kind of person who started a new diet or weight loss plan every week. So when she started her transformation program with U.P., she didn’t want to get her hopes up that this would be any different.
But it was.
“I guess I just didn’t dare to believe in how well or how successful the whole plan would work.
“It didn’t work for me when I did it on my own because I used to start diets on Monday and by Wednesday, I’d given up. And it had been a long time since I had done exercise.
“So, I guess I tried to manage my expectations to not go too far in what I was hoping to reach, but in the end, it seems that it is workable, and I was never made to feel it was unrealistic.”
What was different this time was Joyce had the expertise of a whole team of professionals behind her. And the support of a dedicated trainer to manage every aspect of her journey and help keep her accountable to her goal.
Even when a lockdown came into force and the gym was closed, Joyce’s trainer navigated her through the challenges with constant progress.
She was able to continue to progress towards her weight loss goals with outdoor training alongside her trainer for several months.
“I joined just before the lockdown. I think we had two sessions before the gyms were closed.
“Originally, I thought that was going to be a hindrance, but I was offered the option to train on Pier 10 – in an open public area.
“And the results – although probably not as much as they would have been had I continued in the gym – the results were there! That encouraged me to continue with the non-gym training, doing some work on my own at home, and to continue with the program.”
Trusting the process
Joyce put her faith in the process. With her health in the hands of her trainer, she stuck to the plan, ticked off her daily goals and continued faithfully following her diet and meal plan.
It worked. Bit by bit, the weight came off. Step by step, Joyce got stronger. And week by week, Joyce could see the difference in herself until 36 weeks later, she had lost an incredible 26.7kg.
Fifty-one-year-old Joyce firmly puts it down to the professionalism and accountability of her trainer and the team at U.P.
“I don’t think that, even though I had fairly far-out goals, that I would get as far as I did.
“The last time I weighed 76kg was possibly 20 years ago!
“I definitely don’t think I could have done this on my own. I don’t have the discipline or the accountability towards myself. And I believe that having a coach or a trainer that comes and asks you to be accountable, and holds you accountable, makes all the difference.”
The scale of Joyce’s transformation didn’t sink in until she began sorting through her old clothes.
Trying on the wedding dress she hadn’t worn for over 20 years was a huge surprise.
“I tried my wedding dress on the other day for the first time in 25 years, and I actually could not believe that it fits.
“The whole back has buttons going down, and every button can be tied up. So, I certainly wasn’t expecting ever to get into that dress in my life again, and that’s pretty cool considering the fact that I never even wore it for my wedding.
“I’ve got a whole new wardrobe of all the clothes I’ve kept and travelled around the world with. I don’t need to go and buy clothes yet; there’s a whole lot of old clothes waiting for me that I can now get back into.”
Joyce is not the only one who is stunned by the results she has achieved.
Family, friends and colleagues she has not seen for a while have all been blown away at the transformation she has undergone.
“It’s great to see people you’ve not seen in a long to have this reaction when they see you – to question what you’ve done and how you’ve done it.
“Some people have a completely out-there reaction – they just can’t believe that in a matter of 6-7 months, the change can be this radical.
“But it feels great. It’s always nice to be told that you don’t look like you used to, especially if you didn’t like the way you looked.
“So, it’s been a great transformation. I love getting those comments.”
It’s been a remarkable journey. And Joyce has taken away knowledge and skills that will serve her for life.
