After just 16 weeks of training with UP, she looks and feels incredible – losing 27 lbs (12.4kg) and almost halving her body fat.

At work in meetings, I sat and chose certain postures to cover up my weight wherever possible and noticed I was thinking about my weight 50, 60, even 100 times a day. I couldn’t concentrate on what others were saying, and it pretty much became all-consuming.”
While she had trepidation about lifting weights for the first time, it soon became clear to Rose just how effective UP’s weights-based training protocols were in delivering results.
The weight started falling off, and her confidence grew every session – along with her strength and fitness. The results after 16 weeks of hard training and learning lifelong lessons about proper nutrition were resounding.
“It’s changed me completely,” she says.”Both in the way I look, but also in the way I feel about myself. Before I started, I (without sounding too dramatic) was a shell of the person I knew I could be – and this transformation got my confidence back.
“I felt myself again and hadn’t felt like that in years. For the first time in a long, long time, weight wasn’t constantly on my mind, and it was as if the fog had lifted and I was free. I used to stare at other people on the tube and in the street and be in anguish that I couldn’t look like them. Now, I don’t care and am happy with the way I look. It’s amazing to have that mental and physical transformation.”
Rose talks in-depth here about why her transformation was such a success…
What did you know about UP before you started?
Very little – my company had recently moved offices to Shoreditch, which was a good marker to start personal training. I simply googled the three closest personal training websites to my new office location, and then went on the websites.
UP appeared to have a lot of results and were serious about training. I didn’t want to join a gym where I jumped about with 2kg pink dumbbells – I wanted to change things drastically and quickly.
A few friends had suggested that personal training would work for me (I’m pretty goal-driven, tenacious and like constant feedback) but never quite got round to it. I was a typical 30-something-year-old professional female that socialised and worked hard, did a bit of exercise but was constantly fighting (and losing) the weight battle – and tried every diet going. Some had worked for a time, but then I’d always swing back into being overweight.
Did you have any concerns going into the UP training programme?
Many! I have never done personal training before, never done any weights before and was frankly intimidated by the whole concept. Would I get shouted at? Would he/she understand me? What happens if the weights get me really muscly? What happens if I don’t get on with the trainer? I had contradicting fears also: would this even work/deliver any results at all? Or would it go the other way and I end up looking like a bodybuilder?
Is work or socialising going to get affected by this? I had a real concern it would mean I couldn’t eat out at restaurants, or round at a friend’s – I had a number of weddings to attend during the 16 weeks – how would that work? Would it be worth the money? Can they do what they say they do, or are the photos just of a few clients, rather than the norm?
The list of concerns goes on…and pretty much all of them were unjustified. Some were alleviated during the initial consultation, and some by the time I finished my 16 weeks at UP.
What were your expectations going into the programme and what were your motivations?
My expectations: I didn’t have that many, given I knew so little about UP and weight training. I approached this with a total surrender of my own choices: I’d eat what they’d tell me to, exercise when/how they said, and anything else in between. I’d got to the point where I felt that I’d exhausted all my own active choices, and so anyone’s else were as good or better.

This, coupled with a close friend insisting on personal training being the way forward and our offices moving, it seemed like the right time to sign up.
Can you tell me how you were feeling both physically and mentally before starting your transformation journey?
Physically: despite being overweight, I was fairly fit.
Mentally: At the end of the road. It’s no secret that personal training is expensive and much of my savings went into this 16-week transformation. So mentally I was very much signed up and into it.
What effect did this have on your health, performance, lifestyle and energy inside and outside the gym?
Outside the gym: I definitely have more energy, sleep better (bar my muscles aching from a workout!), etc. I’m not sure on how good my heath was pre-transformation but I had my blood tested at the end, and I was in normal range for everything.
In the gym: I got stronger each session and went from never doing any weights, to sumo deadlifting 110kg for x10 reps x4 sets / 130kg x3 rep max in 16 weeks. I’d never been able to do one press up, now I can do 25 in a row, and I’m almost at the point of being able to do a pull-up.
How did you find the training and did it fit around your busy lifestyle?
After initially being terrified, I got over that pretty quick and found the training itself was a lot of fun. It felt good to get a sweat on, work to my max for a full hour and then be able to feel the benefits of it for the following few days.
The sessions were at the absolute limit to pushing myself, without it feeling overwhelming or daunting. A great balance was struck between never feeling intimidated, but at the same time doing more than I could have imagined.
My sessions were during the day, and as work was two minutes away, I did this three times a week over my lunch hour. My work wasn’t affected at all; I got just as much sleep (if not more because my body was so tired) and very much still saw my friends in the evening.
If anything, it got me awake for my afternoon meetings. Saying this, the first month was brutal in that my body ached from head to toe most days (even rest days) as my body was getting morphed into a better version very quickly – and that did physically hurt at the start.
What were the most impactful things you learned during your transformation and what really worked for you in helping you make your transformation?
- The way my body looks is totally within my control and I can change it. If I eat sensibly and go to the gym – I can look good and the way I want to.
- Food diary is everything. It gives me the accountability and willpower I need to stop bingeing.
- (For a woman) weights first and foremost burn fat rather than build muscle (good news!)
- Lots and lots of people struggle with food. Even the personal trainers binge, want to eat unhealthy food and have to work hard to look the way they do
- Learning good technique for each exercise made a massive difference, and how to build up weights/reps to achieve the look you wanted
- Really honestly: I learnt that personal trainers are a lot more than just “brawn over brain” stacked blokes that are superficial and value looks over feelings. It couldn’t be further from the truth. The trainers at UP are well-educated, kind and dedicated individuals, that want nothing more than to help you achieve your goals, whatever that might be. They know their stuff: whether that’s on how to motivate you, what exercise to change and when to achieve the look you want, nutritional advice, even helping with the menu choice when going out for dinner with friends – they are there 24/7 for support. The trainers are the asset of UP, and client results are down to those individuals.
How has doing this transformation changed you and do you think it will benefit you going forward?

I hope and think that I’ll never go back to looking and feeling like that ever again. It was a pretty dark place, and even if I slip by a few kg, I know how to turn it back. That I think is the most important lesson I’ll take forward: I know what I have to do to look and feel the way I want to now.
Would you recommend UP and why?
The abridged answer: the single best decision of my adult life, so yes, I would indeed recommend UP.
The extended answer is that this is a company with educated, caring personal trainers who deliver results.
They also make it extremely clear at the start that you will not be successful unless you (the client) are also committed – so they mentally prepare you to put the effort in, that is absolutely required in order to achieve the results.
They also don’t try to do the “one size fits all” approach. They tailor where possible your lifestyle to minimise impact and maximise results (for example, I can’t cook at all and didn’t want to make lunches to take in, so got given recommendations for some great food places at lunch). The trainers here know their stuff, their commitment is genuinely 24/7 and when training you in the gym- hone your technique and get the absolute best out of you and then some.
How do I feel now?
At the end of the 16 weeks, I signed up for another month to shave off a few more kg then took a few months off over Christmas. I put a few kg back on straight away, but have since levelled out and maintained weight. It feels great to be eating sensibly (not unhealthy or extreme dieting), going the gym and having a balanced approach.
As of last week, I’ve signed up for another eight weeks: I miss training at UP and want to lose a little more ahead of the summer season. Mentally, I feel happier than I have in years. And that is down to both UP, and me.
